What else can I customise?
« on: November 05, 2006, 11:55:24 AM »
I can make a nice WPS, have a different backdrop for the rest of the system.. and change the font I use. Is there anything else I can do to change how the whole thing looks?

I would like to be able to do something with backgrounds, or borders or perhaps just background icons or something. Things that help with navigation by making it stand out and obvious as to what kind of menu or tree you are in, at a glance.

The theming ability of rockbox is pretty limited from what I've seen. I've seen some patches that extend the current capabilities (such as having multiple fonts, being able to theme the menus, etc), but I am staying away from them so themes I make work with current builds that are readily available. I guess, in short, theming is limited to WPS, with the added effect of specifying a background and font for everything else.

I'd like to see theming expanded, personally. I want to be able to use multiple fonts (or perhaps move to a font system that allows variable sized fonts), match the menus to the WPS a bit more, and possibly even have some ability to manipulate the menus a bit. I know some devs will probably say all of this can already be done, but I'd like to be able to offer a package that is dumped onto the device and is usable from there, without recompiling, or overwriting existing system files.

Of course, this is an auxilliary request from me. I'm wanting stability and performance to come first ;)

I agree. It would be nice to be able to customize the status bar in the menus, so they'd be consistent with a themed WPS. I don't really care about any eye candy beyond that convenience.
