Iriver h140 pitch at 105 freezes
« on: November 03, 2006, 11:09:07 PM »
Hello everyone,
I'm using Rockbox on my iriver h140(updated to h180). I'm playing mainly aac and mp3. I noticed that my music was playing at a slower pitch than it should so I increased my pitch to a better (to my ears...) 105%. So now everything sound perfect but after a while my iriver freezes and I have to reset it everytime it happens...:(

Is it some setting that I didnt tweeked properly or a bug from Rockbox...?

What build (date)?
Try a current cvs build and see if you have the same problem.

Cool :)
I'm on rockbox-h120-20061102 right now. I was on the 20061108(this morning) build but everytime I was stoping my playback my optic output would be turn of...anyway, I went back to the older build I knew would work but still, pushing up my pitch would make eventualy my Rockbox freeze...

Just to be sure, reinstalled the last cvs build cause I was running on the daily build but I can't use the stop without loosing my digital output again  :(

Any other ideas?

Some more specifics would be grand. What kind of freeze? Any error messages? For what kind of codec does this happen? Does it happen for other files using same/different codecs? Any other notable audio settings you have enabled?

Total freeze. No message. Usualy I can play around 5-10 song(normal size) than the sound stop and the screens(Iriver and remote) freeze and I can't use any buttons appart the reset one...

I play mostly aac filles at 204kBit compressed in Itunes(latest version before 7). It happens with all aac files I played. I haven't tryed on mp3 yet. Ill make some test and let you know.

My audio settings haven't been changed appart from the optical out on.

Weird anyway. And you're sure the pitch setting is really involved? AAC isn't exactly our best working codec as of yet, but shouldn't crash, as far as I know. Any more specifics you might encounter would be helpful as this matter won't exactly be easy to find as is.

I don`t know if it`s realy the pitch that is involved. But I`m sure that my aac sound too low. Could it be something related to playback speed?

The crashing problem is not hapening when I normaly (100% pitch) play my aac songs. It`s only when I`m crancking up the pitch at 105%. Could the pitch increase/crash problem be caused by some memory buffer getting too full?

So just to resume I have two problems
1. My aac sound too low
2. When I increase my pitch, Rockbox will evantualy freeze

Ill try to see if theres any other specifics that I encouter. Meanwhile if you think of anything(...giving any specific infos...) I can do to help you guys improving Rockbox with aac playback on my H180 please let me know. Unfortunatly I know nothing about coding but if you think of something I can do to help Ill do it.

Thanks alot

It looks like a sample-rate problem to me. Are you having the same problems if you turn optical out off?

That's realy weird. Ijust unpluged my headphones from my headroom MicroStack(dac and amp) and plug them in my iriver remote and my sound was ok. I went back and forth from  my iriver remote to my micro stack and I could see a difference. without switching the the optical out on our of. Once, I repluged my cans to my stack everything sounded perfect...weird

Now, the big problem is that after unpluging and repluging my headpones the sound came back to it's original bad state whatever source(iriver remote\micro stack) I also tryed to turn my optical out of but nothing changed. I swear I took no drugs ???

Rincewind, if it is a sample-rate problem, is there anyway to arrange it in on my side in Rockbox?

I don't think I fully understand what your setup is. If you are using the digital out to an amp and then your phones, then it could be a problem that aac is decoded at 48khz but the optical out sends it with 44.1khz and eventually there is such a huge difference between the codec and the audio buffer that rockbox crashes. There was a big update about sample rates during recording, maybe this broke something. But I'm only guessing, I don't know the rockbox audio code.

If your aac files are encoded with 48khz then this can be the problem and you can change it by reencoding with the (standard) 44.1khz.

My aac were all imported from itune and my settings are:
Stereo Bit Rate: 224kbps
Sample Rate:48kHz
Channels: Stereo
Optimized For MMX/SSE2

My hardware is a Iriver h140(upgraded to h180) optical out to a headroom micro dac that is pluged to a headroom micro amp that is feeding my headphones.

Reencoding to 44.1kHz all my aac songs will be a real pain in the b  :( If I had only known when I imported all my cds...

Any chance that Rockbox will support 48kHz in future builds?

CDs aren't even recorded at 48khz. They're 44.1. So importing them at 48khz is a mistake in the first place.
