Cannot Copy <filename> : Parameter Incorrect
« on: October 31, 2006, 05:48:14 PM »
Searched the forums, found one topic  on this, although the solution was never posted.

Im trying to copy music (an mp3) directly from my HD (Running XP Pro) onto my Ipod Nano 4g 1st Gen. I get an error, Cannot Copy : Parameter Incorrect. This only happens for some files. And I've had one other file do this before, but after restarting my computer, it copied without a hitch. I've tried restarting numerous times, even a complete shut down. Still nothing. Any help on this one?  ???

Try copying the same file to a different drive (or different location on the same hard drive).

If this works then use the copy
If this doesn't work then run scandisk to check the hard drive.

(This is not a problem with Rockbox, as when your iPod is connected to your computer it is running the Apple firmware)

How are you copying?  Drag/drop?  Right click, copy/paste?  Command prompt copy command?  iTunes?

What is the full text of the error?  (I've never heard of that error).  How does it show up?  Dialog box? Error on the command window? Status bar of a program?

Without knowing any of the above answers, I can't give you a definate answer, but I'd do what evilnick suggests and run scandisk.  It sounds like there's a problem either on your hard drive or on your iPod's hard drive.

I've tried all of these, except iTunes.

That is the full text. Nothing more. When copy/pasting, and Drag/Dropping, it is a little pop up box that shows the message, and has an "Ok". button. In the cmd window, it just says Parameter Incorrect.

Err... and I have no idea what so ever on how to use scandisk...  :-[

I think I might switch back to using the iPod firmware, until an improved version of Rockbox is released. The benefits with Rockbox are great, but I'm having lots of problems. The songs stopping before they end and such.

This issue that you are having with copying files has nothing whatsoever to do with Rockbox.

Ah, but, I did not have these problems before. I know its not rockbox itself, but it's still much more tedius(sp?).

Well, you can always use iTunes to synch your player, and then use Rockbox's Tag Cache to browse the files in Rockbox.

Did you copy to your iPod BEFORE putting rockbox on it?  I'm guessing not.  This seems to have something to do with how windows handles the drive, something's not right, and Windows is choking.  Sorry if I sound vague, but the help pages I've seen (I did a google search for copy windows "paramater incorrect" by the way) are just as vague.  Many discuss copying from CDs, and some to and from thumb drives.  It's not that much stretch to expand this to an iPod.

Here also is a search on Microsoft.com

Really, though, this isn't directly related to Rockbox, just a side effect of it.  The problem lies either with windows or your ipod hardware/firmware.

If these pages do nothing, open up explorer and right click on your ipod's drive (It'll probably be E: or D:) and look through that menu.  "Scan disk for errors" is a likely choice under "properties" but I don't have access to an XP machine right now to check.  It'll probaby take a while to run.  Assuming it finds nothing, poke around on Microsoft's website for the latest service pack to your version of windows, and install that.  It could be several hundred meg, so be prepared for that.  IIRC For XP Pro it's Service Pack 2.  It'll likely say you already have it, but allow you to install it anyway.

If all that fails... I don't know.

hi. Was googling the same problem and came up with this site. Thought i might just mention that ure not the only one having the problem. I have a samsung yp-t8z and its got the exact same problems...

[ie
the 'Cannot Copy : Parameter Incorrect' problem is completely random (but happens most of the time). Sometimes when i transfer mutiple files then it works...but it usually stops midway on a specific track and has that error.]

does ure ipod work now officerhalf?

the scan disk thing did you mean properties > tools > error-checking ?
If so that did not work =/

my mp3 player was not like this before... Before i could simply drop and drag. Then it screwed up, and i sent it in for repair. came back to me and now its like  so.

Of coz If there aint a solution anywere ill send it for repair.
Hopefully ures has a warrantee that hasnt expired ?
