Rockbox and me
« on: October 29, 2006, 11:59:54 PM »
hello everyone, new Rockbox user here...i just installed Rockbox using Rockbox Installer X for Windows on my iPod 4G Color last night...i must say, i love it and the lack of battery life doesn't bother me much because i'm usually within 5 hours of a power outlet or a computer. The only thing i think i'm semi-disappointed about is how bland 90% of the GUI is...it can also be very difficult to navigate at times...other than that, i'm in love with it...that's my simple experience (so far) of Rockbox on my iPod.

You won't notice the blandness of the menus in time, as you learn them you'll see how "bland" means "functional" which is all the menus are.

Where you spend almost all of your time, the While Playing Screen (or WPS), can be modified with themes, and some of them are quite pretty (though, the prettier they are, the less useful they are (in general) so you must find a balance).

I started using my iPod with Rockbox.  Recently, I wanted to watch a video (I have a 5G) so I started fiddling with the iPod interface, and absolutely abhorred it.  So, I think the things you don't like are likely just the differences from what you know.  Give it time, you'll get used to the interface, and it's worth it!

thanks for the response...yeah, i've found a few WPS' that i really like that are pretty functional as well as being good-looking...but i usually skip between artists in the ID3 browser (in both stock and RB firmware) so i like to have an OK looking interface for that too

Of course, you can fully customise the contents and functionality of the Tag Cache browser menus as well, if not the actual appearance...
