Cannot edit .bash_profile
« on: October 29, 2006, 06:42:21 AM »
Ok here's the deal I wanted to set my CVSROOT variable in Cygwin and export it instead of fooling around with autoexec.bat.  When I do anything at all to edit .bash_profile I get errors when I start my Bash.  All I have to do is open .bash_profile with wordpad and just hit save without actually doing anything and that alone will cause these errors.  This is not super critical as I have implemented this via autoexec.bat, but this should not be!  I should be able to edit this file and I have no earthly idea what my problem is.  Any thoughts?

Edit: I suspect this is because that file is using Unix line endings and wordpad is using windows, just not sure.

Edit 2: That turned out to be the problem.  Now my question is whether or not it would be considered "kosher" for me to mention other software such as Edit Pad Pro which autodetects line endings and whatnot and uses whatever is already there in the Wiki?  Reason I ask is now I'm wanting to modify a few pages with mention of the line ending issue and what to do.

I think that it sounds like a good idea to mention good editors, and the fact that line endings are important. If you want, you could mention several editors that do the line endings properly (notepad2, edit pad pro etc).
