Ipod 4G stuck
« on: October 24, 2006, 02:04:40 PM »
I went through all the steps for loading rockbox (4G greyscale, latest) for the first time.  Uploaded the latest firmware.  Accidently pulled the USB plug before properly disconnecting the Ipod from the PC, in which the Ipod instantly rebooted, showing the "Apple".  Now, it seems I'm stuck on the bios screen (lack of better terms).  I see the following:

Rockbox boot loader
Version: 20060404-0258
IPod version: 0x00050013
TOSHIBA MK2004GAL
Partition 1: 0x0B 19030 MB
Model ip4g
Checksum: 2623F08
Sum: 2623F08
Rockbox loaded.

It stopped right there.  I can't get it to reboot nor will my PC recognize it anymore.

What should I do?  Any help will be appreciated.  Totally dig this site.  Thanks!

are you sure you extracted the correct Rockbox build to your Ipod?

Yes,  here's the zip file name:  rockbox-ipod4gray-20061024

I'm finally getting past the bios page.  When the Rockbox tries to load, I see a giant USB logo flash across the screen, and then it reboots again.

Can you recommend a working build?

Now I'm stuck on that screen that shows the USB logo.

OK, now I've gone as far back as the 2006-10-22 build.  When Rockbox loads, I get these folders on my screen:

Calendars
Contacts
Data Files
Notes
Rockbox

When I scroll down to Rockbox folder and click it, I get the Rockbox logo for a second and then it goes back to the screen showing the folders again.

Have you read the manual? Does it say "Click on the Rockbox folder?" (And I'll guarantee you it doesn't, because no part of the official installation involves creating a folder called Rockbox. There will be a .rockbox folder, which is hidden by default, and a rockbox.ipod file, which isn't hidden, but you never need to click on.)

Well, I followed all the instructions to load it properly.  What would you suggest I do.  Dump Rockbox off my Ipod and try reloading?

My ipod shows the folders.  I'm not looking at the folders from my PC screen, but from the Ipod screen.  Each folder has a small box next to it.  The Rockbox folder has a red "X" on it.

No, I would suggest reading the manual so you know how to use it, because you're already in it.

I probably shouldn't, that read the manual post pretty much says it all, but anyway..  What you want to do is hit menu again and go into your settings and set yourself up to use your tagcache(exact details in manual, but this will give you an idea of what you probably want to do).  That's assuming you have all your files in those Fthis, Fthat folders that apple puts your stuff in.  Also when you're at that screen you were at if you hit menu and hold it for a second another screen comes up where you can choose whether or not you want to view id3 database(tagcache), supported or whatever.  In your case you probably want to view the id3-database.

Edit: btw, that Rockbox folder isn't a folder.  I believe that is the rockbox.ipod file and when you click on that you're resetting rockbox.....I think?  Also since you're on a 4g ipod you might want to check out the mikeage build since you are probably affected by that dreaded frequency scaling bug.

In your case by "clicking" on that "folder" (it *is* the rockbox.ipod *file*) you simply reboot Rockbox (but without going through the bootloader). Who on earth told you to "click" on that file?
