iPod nano shutdown = reboot ?

zajacattack:
See http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=15925.0 for a similar problem. I don't think a permanent solution has been found yet (although the links I provide in the thread offer some temporary ones).

yeabirfday:
@ dreamlayers: yes, in apple firmware, it has the plug-over-battery icon, which I assume means it thinks it's plugged in.  But not in Rockbox (I forget if there's a separate icon.. I think there is)

@ zajacattack: yeah, those threads sound like my problem, thanks for the link.

so basically it sounds like a hardware thing, most likely the logic board.  In case anyone is interested or curious, I did somehow manage to reboot it into Diagnostic mode (something about low battery power, since I had to plug it into USB to get it to reboot *out* of it, otherwise, it just kept resetting into Diagnostic mode).  Oh yeah, the first time it happened I was rebooting out of apple firmware, but I don't know how much that had to do with it.

Under Status:

Mod#: MA099
HP: 0
FW_PWR_GOOD: 1
USBPWR_Det: 1
CHRG: 1

I take it the "1" in the last two fields indicate that it thinks it's on USB power and is charging.

There's a Power test, too:
==============
Battery A2D
Battery=486
Battery=4.14V
Range:3.93-4.08V

VCC Main
VCC=428
VCC=4.00V
Range:3.84-4.04V

ACC A2D
Acc=1023
Acc=5.40V
Range:3.15-3.45V

Charge Current Test
Current=19
Current=0.01A
Range:0.185-0.225A
==============

and then while plugged in to USB (already in Diagnostic, plugged it in because it wasn't resetting back to normal or Rockbox firmware, ran the test before restarting):
==============
Battery A2D
Battery=1023
Battery=5.40V
Range:3.93-4.08V

VCC Main
VCC=1023
VCC=5.40V
Range:3.84-4.04V

ACC A2D
Acc=1023
Acc=5.40V
Range:3.15-3.45V

Charge Current Test
Current=8
Current=0.00A
Range:0.185-0.225A
==============

I guess that's about all that I've learned.  Now to decide what my options are... (new logic board?  new battery to at least delay running down?  just deal with it?)

Thanks for the replies, I was (pleasantly) surprised how quickly responses came back.

dreamlayers:
With the 5G iPod I posted about in a different thread, it would "shut down" from the Apple firmware, probably because there shutdown is actually sleep.  Could you see if you can shut down in the Apple firmware?

If the Apple firmware can shut off in these cases then maybe a patch could be developed for Rockbox which causes off to actually be sleep.  I don't mean fully developing sleep support for Rockbox.  While that would be nice, it is outside the scope of this.  I mean off being sleep but with Rockbox restarting after the device is turned on.  This might not be hard to do.

Chronon:
I don't think there's a way to do what you want.  Only the Apple firmware currently has a sleep function.  In order to sleep the unit the Apple firmware must be running.  When the unit wakes back up it will wake back into the Apple firmware.  I don't see how to force it to reboot into Rockbox from sleep without modifying the Apple firmware itself -- or implementing a proper sleep function within Rockbox.

yeabirfday:
it seems like my ipod is opposite of the 5G dreamlayers posted about: regular battery icon, no plug icon in Rockbox (I don't know about when it's actually plugged in because I don't have a usb charger/adapter, only a cable that I plug into my computer, which makes it go to disk mode), and plug icon while in Apple firmware.  Rockbox does show the battery as always being full (and reports it at 100% in Rockbox Info), meaning I have no idea when it's about to die on me.   ::)

Going to sleep/standby in apple makes it think it's sleeping while plugged in - the backlight is off, but the screen shows a (large) battery with a plug over it and at the top it says, "Charged".
