Clipping on iPod Nano
(1/1)
DrLex:
Sorry if this has already been posted, but the search function is currently broken.
I'm using Rockbox on my 4GB iPod Nano and it works great. However, the bass boost seems to cause clipping on many songs. I thought I've read somewhere that Rockbox avoids clipping by limiting the volume according to the bass setting, but the distortion here seems to be independent of the volume. The bass & treble boost are the only things I've changed about the sound settings, the EQ is off and the songs that clip don't have replaygain tags.
Llorean:
The Bass and Treble boosts are actually handled in Hardware. We just set the values but the hardware takes care of everything else.
If you wish to avoid clipping, try playing with the parametric equalizer instead (making sure to use the preamp to balance out added gain to avoid clipping).
Rockbox allows you the full range of Bass/Treble boost, and does not take steps to prevent clipping, so you have to make your own judgements on how far you're willing to push the hardware.

I can't comment on how Rockbox limits, but adding replaygain tags would almost certainly avoid the problem.

Indeed, I have never noticed clipping on replaygained songs. But although high on my priority list, it will take a while before I can replaygain my entire collection due to complicated reasons ;)
