:_( Help Linux installation 5g 30GB IPOD
« on: October 17, 2006, 05:50:27 PM »
Hello there,

I followed the instructions to install rockbox into my IPOD since ITunes kind of sucks, banshee is kind of limitated and the whole interface is just "pretty" IMHO.

This is about the forth time I tried this (might be of help knowing this fact), i downloaded and compiled all the necesary files, then executed:

# dd if=/dev/sda of=mbr.bin count=1
1+0 records in
1+0 records out
512 bytes (512 B) copied, 2,42058 seconds, 0,2 kB/s
# dd if=/dev/sda1 of=bootpartition.bin
160587+0 records in
160587+0 records out
82220544 bytes (82 MB) copied, 268,617 seconds, 306 kB/s
# ./ipod_fw -o apple_os.bin -e 0 bootpartition.bin
# ./ipod_fw -o apple_sw_5g_rcsc.bin -e 1 bootpartition.bin
# ./ipod_fw -g video -o rockboot.bin -i apple_os.bin bootloader-video.bin
Generating firmware image compatible with iPod video
# dd if=rockboot.bin of=/dev/sda1
15077+1 records in
15077+1 records out
7719484 bytes (7,7 MB) copied, 23,827 seconds, 324 kB/s
# mount /dev/sda2 /media/usb
# unzip rockbox-ipodvideo-20061017.zip -d /media/usb
Archive:  rockbox-ipodvideo-20061017.zip
# umount /media/usb
#

But still no luck, my IPod tells me to connect with ITunes to get fixed.

I tried to search for this topic but I find no missing step on my installation (as some people in the forum has)

Any clue please?

THANKS A LOT!

Chainy

1) What did you do after the earlier failed attempts to install Rockbox?  In those cases, you should either restore your ipod to the factory state using itunes, or rewrite the original, unmodified bootpartition.bin using the command "dd if=bootpartition.bin of=/dev/sda1"

2) The newer 5gs (called "Late 2006 5gs" by Apple, and "5.5g" by other people), won't work with Rockbox at the moment.  You can tell if you have one of these because "fdisk -l /dev/sda" will tell you the drive has 2048-byte sectors (all other ipods have 512-byte sectors).
