Does anyone have an idea why resizing/resampling is not done by the current plugin?
If it would be possible to decode to one size larger than the screen, then a simple linear resampling could be used to create an image that just fits the screen.
Will this actually be too slow on the portable players, or are there any other known reasons why it hasn't been done yet?

If there are no technical limitations or something like that to it, then I may want to give it a try myself if I find some time left.

There isn't a technical limitation.  These portable players are computers.  I'm sure it would be slow, perhaps prohibitively so, but it's assuredly possible.

Is there a reason you don't resize the jpgs before you put them on your player?

Ok, maybe I'll try then and see how fast it works. I don't think that much processing power should be needed given the limited resolution.

The reason for not resizing the pictures before putting them on my player for me is at first of course laziness/not enough time.
The second reason is that I also often use my player just as external storage, to transport files (and digital pictures) from one place to another. Sometimes it's still useful to be able to show the files on the player itself as well though, but you haven't thought about that when you put the files on for example.

i had an idea about putting stuff in rockbox..
but i think people wont like it, since its kinda reks the whole essance of 'rockbox'...

but im gonna say it anyway,
i think there should be a nice litle program on windows\linux\mac etc.. a very simple one.. (like the one for X5 players.. anyone know it ?:\)

anyway, it would save some time for the player itself.. rather if its commiting tagcache on the PC itself, or making a scaled picture (?) so it wouldn't need to load it in so much time... and other things that are commited on the player, that could be easly and very fastly be commited on PC..

just my thought.... i still have doughts about it..
