Another structure to channel info...
« on: October 13, 2006, 10:05:27 AM »
I think it would be a good idé to channel information more to specific players. I.e. have all the supported players on top of the page, then as soon as I click one, for example the Nano. Then would I only like to see info that is related to it:

1. changes that affect my player (changelog)
2. new features
3. known problems
4. direct link to that wiki section

There should also be some general stuff that isn´t specific for any player, sort of the stuff that holds the community together.

Guess it could be done with some meta-tagging, ie. when someone posts something in the forum, then let the person choose if he thinks this info is useful for maybe nano and x5 users. That would be a nice start to start sorting out info on the site. Then will the GUI change be made alot easier.

I´d be glad to express what I mean in greater detail if someone finds it intressting.

The forums are already arranged generally this way.  The General Forum is for "general stuff that isn´t specific for any player."  There are hardware forums for issues that are unique to specific devices.  The whole point of the way the forums are organized, however, is that most of the discussion here relates to Rockbox generally.  We have made a concerted effort to ensure that posts that relate to Rockbox's general operation do not get buried in hardware-specific forums.

I have no idea what you mean by "then will the GUI change be made a lot easier."

Im thinking about personiliazing the entire site.

Thhe hardware forums have topics with titles that points to the related device, but still different devices exists listed at the same place, ie. topics like "X5 low battery" and "nano crashed @ connect".

My design suggestion will lead to less but more detailed opinions, which can have negative effects for future development of the project, i.e. Nano people will only be concerned with the nano problems and don´t take part in other areas.

But it might also present a more focused view on specific problems, and that can also be a good thing.

I believe that there a people who just love the whole concept of this site and want to take part of it all, but as I wrote earlier, would I appreciate if I could get the info that I want in a little more channeled form.

The "GUI change"-thing was just a thought that I had in my mind that would ease the change process of the site.

This is the end of a loong week for me, and I can clearly see that it affects the way I write. I just can´t get it all together in a good way ;)

We just moved *away* from player-specific categories in the forums.

Simply put there are VERY few Nano-only or X5-only issues, so it would be an exceptional waste of focus to have areas specifically for them.

The *most* important thing, though, is that in the majority of situations the user is not qualified to determine whether its a general problem, or one specific to their player. This means that you very often got (in the past) questions posted in the Nano-only forum that were actually related to all iPods, or sometimes even all players. It is much easier for the developers to find appropriate posts now as compared to the past.
