Playing tracks whilst iPod is charging

Hello.

Sorry if this has been brought up before, or is mentioned elsewhere, but is there a way to continue using my iPod as a player whilst connected to my computer via USB for charging, rather than having to browse the disk as an external hard drive and play the tracks via the computer's media player?

I'd like to be able to lie in bed at night and listen to music without having to get up every few minutes to change the track on the computer.
