help on Mini
« on: October 09, 2006, 09:59:55 AM »
Hello im new and I have some questions about rockbox.

How do I know what is my generation of ipod? I bought my mini like 2 years ago.

Also when I try to do this stage:  e) Create the new Rockbox-enabled image file containing the Rockbox Bootloader

on the command prompt it says: Generating firmware image compatible with ipod mini, 4g and ipod color/photo
Cannot open loader image file bootloader-mini1g.bin

Note: I tried doing it with both mini1g and mini2g.bin

I succesfully did every other step up to that one and each was ok.

Please help. so nobody knows what the hell is wrong?

1) You really shouldn't be doing that step until *after* you know what generation you have, since you have to pick the right file for your generation in advance.

2) Have you downloaded the right .bin file and put it in the same folder as you're running the commands, because it *really* seems like you haven't.

3) http://ipodlinux.org/Generations

http://ipodlinux.org/Generations doesn't help noobs definitively identify 1G vs. 2G Minis.  I have an old 4GB Mini, that I assume would be 1G, but the webpage describes the 1G storage as:

Storage     Silicon Storage Technology's SST39VF800A (http://www.sst.com/products.xhtml/parallel_flash/39/x16/SST39VF800A) 8Mbit Flash.

I didn't even know the mini was produced with flash storage and I thought they all had disk drives.

The 2G Mini listing describes a 4GB model, but the page claims they also have engraving on the back and better battery life, which my Mini lacks.

My Mini came with both USB and Firewire cables.  Is it truely a 1G, despite the misleading flash memory spec on the webpage?

Thanks,

Cal

The flash memory spec is almost definitely an error. The definitive means of telling the difference are whether the labels on the scrollwheel match the case color or not, and whether the back of the case displays the capacity.

Thanks, Llorean!  Looks like I have a 1G, then.  ;D
