A newbie question about style
« on: October 08, 2006, 07:28:26 AM »
Hi to all,
i have an iPod nano 1st gen. I would think of switching to Rockbox, but the important question i would say to you:
There is a theme that permit me to have the EXACT look like the original apple firmware? Fonts... colors... dimensions... icons... and so on.

Forgive me for the eventually too newbie question :)
Thanks to all for the wonderful effort

If you look in our WPS Gallery, you will find a number of themes that closely resemble the original iPod firmware.  The original firmware uses antialiased fonts, which Rockbox does not support, so there are no themes that are an exact duplicate of the Apple interface.

I see, many thanks.
Why rockbox doesn't support antialiasing? It's a feature will be implemented in the future?

Rockbox supports custom backgrounds. The fonts in the Apple firmware are very likely prerendered with faked antialiasing, whereas it would be necessary to perform this process realtime in Rockbox for it to look any good. Because of the nature of these devices this isn't really feasible without a significant hit on battery life and probably playback performance.

@Llorean
If i've understood correctly:
The apple firmware uses some kind of "colored" fonts (that is grayscale antialiased). So eventually i would be able to use in the WPS the recreated antialiased colored fonts (recreated by me)?
Have i understood correctly?

Rockbox only allows monochrome fonts, no grayscale.

Oh, what a pity.
Well i hope in the future this feature will be added so i could have a perfect apple clone with all the magnificent features of rockbox. :)
Thanks for now  ;)

Why do you need a perfect clone?

Because i like very much the original style, and for me would be perfect to maintain the same, but with the beautiful features of rockbox :)

At first, I wanted a WPS that looked like the original iPod screen, then I started realizing how limiting it was. First, why does that Apple screen flip to a screen with only a slider when you adjust the volume? Why flip to another screen at all? I know they probably wanted to keep the main screen uncluttered, but they have yet another screen for rating your songs, then yet another for a blow up of the album art (and then another for lyrics, which actually makes sense to me).

My current WPS is rather cluttered, but it has a graphical volume indicator, battery indicator, lists genre and year on a line that alternates with codec/bit rate and playlist position, shows cover art, and even has a line showing you the next song that will play. All on my tiny nano screen.

I'm guessing that once you have the iPod look, you're going to want to get away from it. If you wanted an iPod clone, you would've stayed with the Apple firmware and not even touched Rockbox.

Actually I really think all he likes is just the While Playing Screen. Not the menu and stuff.

What i like, and i would like to maintain of the original firmware, are the icons, the good fonts, and smoothed grey look. All the rest i would personalize. And actually the only thing that stop me to do the switch is the fact that i can't use antialiased fonts in rockbox.

If looks are more important than playback quality and features, you're probably best sticking with the original firmware anyway.

I don't understand how this is a difficult decision. If you truly believe the Rockbox features are better, can you not live without smoother fonts?
