newbie - ipod 5G 30gig video

I would have never bought an Ipod before because it didnt support enough formats.. and I hate the way Jobs has to try and control everything... get over it Steve!

My wife won me this ipod by entering my name in a drawing.. I almost sold it but decided it was better than my old 5 gig rio carbon and maybe I could find a way to tweak it..

Well I found your site/software a week too late because i couldn't tolerate Itunes for more than 1 minute and so broke down and bought Anapod.  :(

All i wanted was windows explorer... but NOOOOO! At least until now..  ;)

So anyway.. You know I will be reading through the manual and giving this a go.. Thanks in advance for making my dream come true.. I wonder what Anapods return policy is lol..

My first questions are... any suggestions on which build to use for this bad boy? Should I just go for the latest release? Anybody out there who can tell me they've put this on my version and it works fine?

I have been using both one of the later versions and Senabs build. I would stick with just one of the CVS builds for now. It will take you a while to work your way through the menu options :)

You will love it. Once the bootloader is on, the rest is very easy.

Well I tried installing, following the instructions carefully, and got the error "connect to your computer, use itunes to restore" when I tried to boot it back up..

Very fortunately, unlike this guy: http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=6182.0, I was able to uninstall Rockbox and restore the original.

Now I have to build up the nerve to try again.. Looks like other people have been hosed when they've seen this error. I don't know what to try differently, but I will follow the instructions again and see what happens I guess...

I will also look through the online installation notes for ipods I just found...

With my first try,  I couldn't figure out which CVS version to use, so I used a daily build...

looking at the online instructions, one thing I didnt do was power off in between installing the bootloader and then copying the rockbox files over.. I reckon I can try that.. I think I found the CVS version too this time..

The person in the link you posted did not get "hosed". In all honesty, he probably never even tried manually booting into disk mode (an option that is always available, even if the disk on your iPod is completely wiped out, and Rockbox only puts files on the disk, which is what makes it so safe for iPod users) as you may have noticed him never mentioning trying such a thing (nor really trying anything other than 'panic' and 'return my iPod').
