4th Gen Problems
« on: October 04, 2006, 09:58:22 PM »
I recently installed Rockbox (correctly--I know my way around a command prompt), but it seems to be having a lot of issues.  It often hangs at the initial loading screen, last line of which reads "Rockbox loaded."  Occassionally it will progress to the RockBox graphic, but I've only been able to access the actual menus once or twice.  Whenever I try to play a song, it freezes again.  I've mastered the reboot and reboot to disk mode method, but to no avail.  Neither the latest nor daily build of the firmware have made an impact.  I though my iPod itself was the culprit--it's seen better days as far as the hard drive goes.  I reformatted and performed a sector repair, and then reinstalled RockBox, but I still have the same problem.  Is there anything else I can try, or is RockBox just not an option for me?  Thanks.

Edit: Greyscale, by the by.

it seems to be a common problem with the iPod photos, however, i was just reading through the main board here and found this post:

http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=6548.0

it talks about how the photo seems to have problems, but one person posted about a specific build being better than the rest.

it seems though, there are people out there who don't give free software a chance though. (read through the above post and im sure you will understand  ;))

Haha.. wow.  Apparently not.

September 1st build, eh?  Unfortunately, it's not listed on the older builds page.  I'm assuming only the last month's are available?  I'll pick through what's there and see if any work.  Thanks for the tip.

it looks like the 3rd of september is the oldest they have, but seeing as the file size didnt change until about the 6th, maybe the 3rd is alright? worth a shot isnt it? ;D

(sorry for double post mods)

For the time being (until the CPU scaling issues can be resolved) this custom build should help greatly with your problems: http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=6357.0

Ah, excellent!  The custom build is working like a charm so far; i.e., it actually booted.  Whether it plays music or not is yet to be discovered, but it's already an improvement.  Thank you!

If you need, I can email you the zip of the 9-01 build.  I'm interested to try out this custom-build now though to see how it holds up.
