Philips HDD1620
« on: October 04, 2006, 06:44:26 AM »
Hi! Sorry for my english, I hope you understand me!
I saw this site this morning for the first time, it is wonderful!
I dream for a lot of time to change or modify the firmware or my mp3 player...I love modding in general...
I don't know if this is the right section of the forum, if not, sorry.
My question is about a very good and pretty player, Philips HDD1620 (or similar model -hdd1600; hdd1420; hdd1400).
Here is the link for the official site :

http://www.consumer.philips.com/consumer/catalog/product.jsp?language=en&country=GB&catalogType=CONSUMER&productId=HDD1620_05_GB_CONSUMER

So, my english is not so good, and I saw this link, it means that you can't help me to do something with this player if I'm not able to start?

http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/NewPort

Thank you, bye!

Your English is better than many of the people who don't apologize, so don't worry about that!

This is also not the correct forum.  The correct forum to post in is the "New Ports" forum under "Rockbox Development."

And, finally (and sadly, for you) a port to a new mp3 player takes one person with 2 things:  A desire to have Rockbox on that player and the ability to do most if not all of the work.  That's the way open source works.  If you want it, you either do it yourself or wait for someone else to do it (or do what I did, buy an mp3 player that runs it)

I hope you can get Rockbox on your player, both for you (Rockbox is great!) and for Rockbox (more players = more users).  However, as I've never seen this player before, I suspect it's fairly small on the market share, so it's fairly likely that you are the only one, for a while at least, who will want this port.  So I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out that if you don't do it, it won't get done.

Seems to be very similar to the H10. (Same screen specs, probably same HDD, voice recording, mi4 firmware, etc.)

Hi! Sorry if I return after all this time!

Do you want to say that there is some possibility to do what I'd like to do? (have a modified or new firmware for this player)

Thank you!

It's very possible, I'm not a developer, but I imagine that you would probably need to modify some H10 code and write a button driver.

It means that the firmware file format is already "cracked" for you, so you can (probably) disassemble the existing firmware easily generate your own version. Important knowledge.

But apart from that I don't think anyone has worked on or taken a deeper look on this unit so there's a lot of work ahead. See the NewPorts wiki document for a step-by-step guide.

I've tried to add this info to the Wiki but have been waiting for an activation email three times. This problem is is most likely my own doing.

I've been using a 1620 for about a year and a half with Rockbox running. I'm having no problems listening to mp3, ogg and wma files, the buttons do what they're supposed to do except that the left and right buttons need an extra press now and again.
The issues I have is a poor battery life, if I shutdown with the phones plugged in the 1620 restarts itself. The player can sometimes start playing if it's left on pause but will stay paused if I unplug the phones. I cant say what the plugins are like as I don't use them on this player. The player can sometimes start up with the volume turned right down but this is very rarely.

To install and to put anything onto the player it has to be connected to the PC using "service mode"     http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/GoGearHDD6330
Compile Rockbox for 1620/30/35
 http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/SimpleGuideToCompiling
Once you get the .rockbox file compiled open it and take the FWImage.ebn file and place it in the System folder (not the "_System" folder) of your player.   ** The System folder is a hidden file so make sure your operating system is set to show it  **.

Michael

BTW Considering the age of the player the battery would'nt be as fresh as it used to be, I'm getting about 2 hours 30 mins to 3 hours out of a charge

Are you MichelDavalos?  It looks like you registered fine.  Did you activate your account on IRC?

Perhaps the problem is that you have the same name as another user.  I suppose you could try entering a middle initial or something similar.
