Ipod 5G 30gig 1.2 firmware not found!

<< < (5/5)

linuxstb:
I've just tried multiple restores of my 5g to v1.2 of Apple's firmware using iTunes 7.0.1, and it still has the normal 512 byte sectors.

So it seems that either Apple shipped some "old" 5gs with 2048 byte sectors, or their list of "Late 2006" (aka 5.5g) serial numbers is incomplete.  The list is on this page:

JoshPowell:
A quick and easy way to check if you have a 5.5G is to look and see if you have the search feature. Apple only enabled it on the 5.5gs, so if you have one of them, you'll have the search. If you don't, its a plane jane 5G.

godzirra:
Intersting.  I -do- in fact have the search feature, but my serial number ends in "V9M".

Are you sure search wasnt added with the 1.2 firmware?

Do you have the search feature under music now after doing a restore of your 5g?  I want to find out of thats a sure fire way to see if you have a 5.5g, or if it shows up after upgrading a 5g to 1.2 firmware.

My serial number ends in V9M as well, and I have search.

From what I've been able to get from google/various sites ONLY the 5.5g ipods have search feature.  The 'older' 5gs do not have this, so apparently Apple gave us some super secret 5.5gs disguised as 5gs. :*( hooray.

--- Quote ---Feature-wise, the new 5.5G iPods offer the following differences from the 5G iPods that debuted last year:

    * 60 percent brighter screens
    * Search
    * Significantly longer battery life during video playback
    * Quick Scroll — a new feature that shows the current letter of the alphabet in a heads-up display while scrolling through a list
    * Gapless playback
    * New video games
    * 640 × 480 video playback
...
The first two features, the brighter screen and the search feature, are only available on the 5.5G iPods. The remaining features are enabled for all 5G iPods updated with the latest firmware (version 1.2)

He says there's actually a THIRD 5th gen ipod that has not been officially released by Apple, presumably the ones we got.

*Edit* CNET and Apple's iPod 'Discussion' Forums confirms that there is indeed an "enhanced" 5G...so we apparently have a model not recognized by Apple..........i can't find how i can talk to Apple directly either :( either their website is an evasive mess or i need to go to bed.
