MEDION JUKEBOX MD 420
« on: October 01, 2006, 04:09:09 AM »
Dear Rockboxers,

I wonder if you have anything for the german jukebox md 420. I think this one also needs some modifications.

IF you are interested, please write a reply or mail me to friedemax@gmx.de,
I will send you the required data.

Thanks for caring!

For information on starting new port efforts, see the sticky in this forum (which consequently is where you should've posted this initially rather than general discussion).

Is the MD 420 another PP5020 based player?

Yes, I think it's Portalplayer based (I read about it somewhere, I believe c't magazine; it should be similar to the g4 ipod).

AFAIK, the 420 is similar to the 95x00 that is already mentioned on my mi4 page: http://daniel.haxx.se/sansa/mi4.html

I figure a porting effort should be fairly easy to start with, since there's a big chance we have a working ATA already and that helps a lot...

Thank you.

I saved the page with the link yesterday night - so I am working on the answers. I will try to "solve" them as fast as I can...

1. The Jukebox is updatable  by simply replacing the "Jukebox.mi4" in folder "System". Unfortunately Medion decided to put no more work in the development of the System since their newest Box is out...also there is no inzternet service to update this Box (refer to iPod).

Medion MD Juke 420 has a 20 GB capacity and works -of course- with USB 2.0.

Continuing...

What you will need to find out is what LCD the Medion has and also all the other hardware components. The easiest way to do that is to take it apart and see what is written on the LCD and all the chips.

See http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/IriverH10Info and http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/IriverH10HardwareComponents for an idea of what would be useful (ie. scans using a scanner and links to datasheets). Also, see if you can find if any other Rockbox device uses some of the same hardware components. This will save some effort in writing drivers for those components.

Hi!

my name is Andrew (Andreas Hundeshagen). I´am admin of a german forum about the medion jukebox 420. Sorry for my bad english. I´dont write much topics in english. Here is the link for the german apod forum:
http://www.razyboard.com/system/user_aldipod.html

BoxRocker ask for pictures of a open jukebox. One of our forum members open the box and make some pictures (many thanks to "groovex"). Here is the link to his topic:
http://www.razyboard.com/system/morethread--aldipod-283126-909868-0.html
and here is the link to the pictures:
http://de.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/gxnl/album?.dir=/a205&.src=ph&.tok=phxetqCBBRlMFGpS

I hope this would help you! For six month we get parents of twins. So i dont have many time to write and managed the forum. I also have an jukebox and i hope, that it is possible to get a better firmware and support. Perhaps you can inform me, when there are news.

Greetings from germany,
Andreas

Sorry! I forget some infomation about the chip. It is a PP5020D-TF (Portal Player chip). you can read about it here: http://www.portalplayer.com/products/documents/5020_Brief_0108_Public.pdf

Unfortunately the pictures are not very interesting.
The only thing I can see is that it uses a Synaptics T1005 touch pad controller, also used by the:

I know I'm digging some old stuff back up here, but I opened my medion, so I might be able to give you some more info on the chips etc. I'll try to be as complete as possible by posting all text I find on the chips.
I can do some programming and I'm still interested in a port, so with some help maybe I can do this.

- on the touchpad: (controller chip)
Synaptics
T1005 0443
CP0164-03

I had to unsolder the lcd from the main board for these:

- main chip:
PP5020D-TF
EC596518-E-7
Q44257.1 0414
korea

- hynix chip (probably memory)
Hynix kor
HY5V560
F-H         418A
38CF1449H

edit: This should be the Hynix HY5V56D, which is SD ram
http://www.hynix.com/datasheet/pdf/dram/HY5V56D(L_S)F(Rev0.3).pdf

- 8pin Philips chip:
8563T
659.1
n4364

edit: this will probably be a PCF8563 realtime clock
http://www.nxp.com/acrobat_download/datasheets/PCF8563_6.pdf

- very tiny 10pins thingie near the power input and USB connector:
AZS
3CW
Z594

looks similar to chips found in the IaudioM3, Iriver players, and OlympusMR100
"It is most likely a TI BQ24020 Li-Ion Charger."

- squared 28 pin small chip (next sd card reader, could be controller for this:
WM
XWM8731
42ABWRV
edit: apparently this is the Wolfson WM8731 Low Power Audio CODEC With Integrated Headphone Driver

- and finally a small bga-like chip
on the sticker:
PA020
2004
.1111

on the chip itsself:
AMIC
A29L400TG-
70  0439SA
MJ9Y6

edit: this seems to be boot sector flash, more info here:
http://www.amictechnology.com/pdf/A29L400A.pdf

-on the SD card connector
PROCONN
043302M
(probably just the manufacturer and type, but I added it for completeness)

- On the LCD: I couldn't read anything from the LCD chip, since it was epoxyed. I did find this:

on the silkscreen print:
SVT in an oval (brand?)
OPPCBD0071  V0.4

printed (stamp) on the LCD pcb:
P160128-10
SYT04Y1811

edit: a little google search on this one brought this up:
http://www.sytco.com.tw/DM/P160128-10-R7.pdf

this one uses HHT8820 controller and NT7701 drivers.
more info on the drivers: http://www.densitron.com/uploadedFiles/Displays/Support/NT7701Ver2.1.pdf
I'm having a hard time finding info on that controller, but this one is probably similar: http://www.raio.com.tw/Data/Datasheet/RA88%20Series/Ra8802_8820_Simple_DS_v11_Eng.pdf

So that is all I could find. I couldn't make any pictures where the texts where actually readable with my camera, so this will have to do.

Please advice if this is any of this makes any sense to someone.

The CPU and DAC are already used by the H10, so we've got drivers written for them.

Edit:  deleted a lot of off topic posts.
