Access to the playlist menu from the WPS
« on: September 28, 2006, 04:48:00 AM »
Since Rockbox is heavily oriented towards playlists, I'd like to propose the following change.

Right now, from the WPS, if I press and hold Select (iPod 4g), I enter the WPS Context Menu. There, the first option is sound settings, and the second is playlist.

If I want to view my current playlist, I have to do:

Hold select
Down
Select
Select.

If we were to switch the order (so that Playlist (and maybe playlist catalog) came before sound settings), then it would be

Hold select
Select
Select

which I think is somewhat easier.

After all, how often do people use sound settings?

I am not familiar with Rockbox on the iPod, but with the H3xx series, we can set,  on a long press of the record button, for the playlist to come up. I use that, so now the WPS context menu is mostly used for sound settings, or to save the playlist.

As for your situation, how good are you at programming? Perhaps you can compile your own version, with it in your order.

iPods don't have a record button. We have menu, select, FF, RW, Play/Pause, and the wheel (at least in my 4g).

Already done (line 846 in onplay.c, in case anyone else wants to play with this).

I was suggesting it as a permanent change.

If you already have a shortcut in the REC button on Hxx's, then maybe it's not such a good idea. Ok, fair enough.

arrow224: You're using a modified build. Please don't list, as a feature, something that you're able to do because of a patch.

I know that I personally have gone into sound settings more often than I've gone into the playlist view, but it's possible it'd be a better place for it at the top.

I've posted a very simple patch at flyspray (http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/6082) that switches the order, if you like...

Granted it's only 13 votes so far, but it's 10-3 in favor of switching.

Is there a procedure to request that this "patch" (I shudder at dignifying 3 lines of code with the same label as the complex patches!) become official?

I use "Playlist->View Current Playlist" very often and never uses "Sound Settings" -  the only parameter that I need to access in there, is the "volume" and that parameter can be accessed from the WPS.

How about a "long play" press in WPS to view current playlist?

This "long play"-press key is not used on the iRiver in the WPS. If it is used on other platforms, then the users of these platforms still need use the menu system to show the current playlist.

Sure, why not?

Sounds like a good idea.

Hehehe. As LinusN has demonstrated, it's really not that necessary to change font sizes to make your point. Well, except for making his point, where it kinda was. ;)

A long-play press is actually use for "Stop" on all the iPod Targets. And a long play press on them is used for "Off".

Yes, it should be, but it doesn't actually seem to be working at the moment (just tried on 061009 - 1318).  Holding play on its own doesn't do anything, and holding play whilst pressing up/down/left/right also doesn't do anything.

Except on iPods!  Long play = stop!

OK, weird!  Just tried with the latest CVS on it didn't intitially work, but after leaving it for 30 seconds it works fine.  I guess I must have been trying it when it was busy buffering or something.

Sorry for both the false alarm and semi-hijacking this thread.

Based on the votes above (you know, 95% abstain, and of the remaining 5%-- 84% in favor of this change), would anyone be interested in considering this UI change?
