Does a wps tag exist to switch display off during play ?
« on: September 27, 2006, 03:54:15 PM »
I was always wondering why my original iPod firmare has no option to switch display off while playing ... would save some battery time ... most people keep their mp3 player in bags, trousers - so why must a display always be on ?

Now I'm in love with rockbox and maybe there is a tag for WPS configuration  ::) What I mean is not just to unlighten the display, it should be turned of totally. I could not find anything in the manual (iPod Nano).

Cheers,

Bluemax

I'm actually working on an all-text (but with album art) WPS that will, when you hit the hold switch, totally blank the screen (With images, the extra "blank" images and code to place them actually caused the battery to drain *more* quickly.  I didn't do any hard tests, but the drain was quite drastic to be noticable within an hour).

I don't know when I'll get to it, but if you want to try it yourself, just use the conditional to the hold switch.  Whenever I'm stowing my iPod where I wont' see it, I turn hold on so the buttons don't get bumped, so this works perfectly for me.

I don't know about ipods, but my H10 has an option to turn the backlight off when you use the hold key. If you can somehow combine this with the ability to turn the screen off completely would do the trick.

When I understood it right, you do the if/else query concerning the hold switch and then all images are deleted to blank the display ... that'll maybe a good idea  ::) Can you show it to us when you have found the clue to it ? (I'm a noob to rockbox)

Yes, I use the hold switch the same like you. When the switch is on I don't need the display. So why don't save battery power ? And rockbox offers us the possibility to use different wps. So it would be easy to get it right for every situation  :D

I don't know either so I asked  for it ;) But this possibility is for me as a user an intelligent feature to have. I'm really wondering why Apple does not have this in original firmware !

The problem is, many images don't disappear when you stop telling them to appear.  You have to actually cover them.  The new album art code, by the way, does NOT have this problem.  I found some time last night and actually whipped up a quick all-text wps that blanks everything upon hitting hold.  It's not ready for general consumption yet, but it's getting there.

 :)

I would appreciate it when you can share your new knowledge with us  ... when you did it ! I'm really looking forward for this 'feature' to save battery time.

I"m having some issues with it.  I haven't tested enough to be *sure*, but it appears that my very simple all-text WPS that blanks the screen on hold actually uses *more* power (by a lot) than any other WPS I've ever tried.  Anybody else notice a power drain (Like, your iPod uses more power than it gets from the USB cable) when using a lot of code for the hold switch?

Huh.  That's very odd.  I haven't done anything along these lines, but that sounds like a bug to me.

My testing is far from complete, but I msut retract my last statement.  The problem seems now to be that if the battery is sufficiently drained (Under 30-50%, I don't know the exact number right now), then it drains faster than it charges if I'm in Rockbox and listening to music.  If it's higher than  whatever that line is (30-50%) then it charges faster than it drains.

This is all in Senab's build, and I want to stress I'm not *reporting* anything, just talking about it because it's kind of odd. When I know more, I fully intend to do it with whatever the latest build is and then actually make a full report.  The problem is, the testing takes some time (I have to let it charge, let it drain, let it sit a while with the cable plugged in (which causes the reproted % to be wrong) then unplug it to see where it is, etc.  Much more involved than just letting the battery drain.

Anyway, like I said, it's odd :D

Okay.

I have a standard CVS build, but I doubt I can get around to doing the test in the near future.  If I do get a chance I'll let you know my results.
