Please Help: Cannot update my songs
« on: September 24, 2006, 03:15:35 PM »
I've been using Rockbox for a while now and I initialized Tagcache a while back. Right now I can't seem to update my music. I added more into the music file at the root but it doesn't show up when I update. Instead, the songs I already have show up as doubles. How do I fix this? Am I updating wrong? Please Help.

What build are you using?

Try re-initializing the Tag Cache.

I've already tried reinitializing and I'm using v.CVS 060809..so do you have an idea of what the problem is?

Try updating to a current build.  There have been a number of bugfixes to the Tag Cache recently.

Also, you can try to remove all *.tcd files in the .rockbox folder. Maybe tagcache hangs on an incomplete file (IIRC there was an issue with that that has been fixed)

Okay, I tried updating my version to the latest build and now when I go to info it says incompatible build and my newer music still doesn't come up. I don't think the problem had to do with tagcache. It just doesn't show up on rockbox period. Will I have to reinstall or something?

Could you please provide some more detail?  (For example, in each place where you use the word "it," what are you referring to?)  What is the exact error message that you are getting, and what are you doing that causes the error?

Okay, well I've updated the build, and the error message I'm getting is "incompatible build" when I go to the info menu. My music doesn't show up on rockbox at all. I hope that clears everything up.

I don't know what caused the error, it just came up right after I updated to the latest CVS build.

First, try re-installing the build.  The error message that you are getting suggests that you did not install the new build correctly.

Second, what player are you using?

Third, how did you load your music onto your player?  When you say that your "music doesn't show up on Rockbox at all," do you mean that it doesn't show up in Tag Cache Browser or the File Browser, or both?

Okay, I'm using a iPod 5g, and I just drag my music files into the music folder I made in rockbox. It doesn't show up in Tag Cache or File browser.

What do you mean by "it"? Tagcache doesn't show folders that are present on your player but only virtual ones based on the tags of your music.

If you get an "incompatible build" you haven't updated your build completely. Updating requires you to not only replace the rockbox.ipod file but also the distributed files in the .rockbox folder.

The main problem I'm experiencing is that my music won't show up in tagcache or the file browser.

bluebrother:
I know that it won't show other folders besides my virtual ones based on the tags.

Oh and I fixed that incompatible build.

Okay, to make sure we're all talking about the same thing:

You plug your iPod into your computer, it mounts as a usb drive, you browse to it in DOS or Explorer, and go to \music\ and there ARE files there, that end in MP3 (or something else like FLAC or OGG).  Make sure you turn on the option in Explorer to see the extensions to make absolute sure.

You unplug your ipod, and it boots into Rockbox, and you get the file browser.  You can see your Music directory, and you 'select' it, and that screen comes up blank (except perhaps the status bar at the top)?

If so, hold down Menu until you get the quick menu.  What does it say for "Show Files"?  Set it to "Music" or "All".  Do your songs show up in either of these cases?

No, I plug it in and yes, there ARE files in there. Rockbox and everything boots up fine. The issue is that the NEW MUSIC FILES I put in there don't show up. I do see my OLD MUSIC that was already put into my rockbox.
