It's described in the installation section of the manual just above the section you quoted:


--- Quote ---Locate the player by opening a command window. You can do this by clicking “Start”, “Execute” and typing cmd. Press Enter to execute that command. Now change directory to the folder you created and run the following commands:
1  ipodpatcher 0
2  ipodpatcher 1
3  ipodpatcher 2
4  ipodpatcher 3

Keep increasing the number until the player is located.

The output for an unsuccessful attempt to contact the player looks like this:
