How about a Graphing Calculator emulator
« on: September 22, 2006, 08:07:22 PM »
I would be sweet to have out my Ipod in math and the teacher goes psycho and i tell him that it's just a graphing calculator. what could he do.

On some Ti Calc website they have a Ti emulator.  It would be tough to figure out how to control.

Just as a note, it will never have as many features or be near as fast inputting than an actual graphing calculator.  Although, it would be useful if you were out jogging and had to graph a function...

I have a feeling it would be easier to have my HP48 emulate my ipod than vise versa.

Take a look at a TI 83, for example. It has *looks at his TI* around 50 keys. How would you emulate that ? Via menus ? This would be total mayhem.

Well, a simple graphing plugin could be coded, but I don't know if lots of people would be interested in it...

Yeah, and I don't think it would be readable on player with smalls screens, such as the nano  ;D

What a dumb idea -.-
Graphing calculators have so many keys and functions.

It isn't a dumb idea.  There are times when this would be useful.  I know that there have been times that I wish I had brought my trusty TI places.  Luckily for me, I have a Treo.  However, it is quite a valid idea on an mp3 player (for some people...I like my DAP to play music  :o) provided that it is implemented correctly.  It would take quite some skill to implement it on an Archos device, or even the nano, but it can be done.

As I said before, it wouldn't come near the ability of a dedicated device, but basic functionality can be done and not be considered "dumb".  That aside, besides the shock reaction from the teacher (only useful the first time really), pulling your ipod out in class and using that instead *is* a dumb idea and would only hinder your learning and capabilities.

If the main purpose was to dupe your teacher... why not just save some pics on to your DAP, keep them in (for fast access) and load the JPGs when needed. A quick google will give you somewhere to start...

Or... you could be really clever, and write a WPS that use a graph as background and scroll song info along the bottom.

I think this would be a cool idea, I was just looking for a graphing calculator app for either rockbox or ipod linux.  I think it would be pretty handy since I don't need a graphing calculator much but it would be handy at times.  I notice this thread hasn't been posted in for a long time, has anything like this been developed?

I don't think this is a dumb idea. However to try to emulate the interace of a TI calculator is a terrible idea. I think if a graphing calculator plug in was to be made, then it'd have to have it's own unique interface.

This is something I would be interested in developing. I haven't developed for rockbox yet, but I do know how to develop software and program in C. I'll be going over the development documentation and possibly starting it. (However my wife would like a kitchen timer app for her device. So I think that will have to have a higher priority.)

+1, I can hardly imagine a 5-button interface emulating a 50-button one. But I think it remains a good idea, and I highly encourage the development of the plugin :).

I use http://sourceforge.net/projects/eigenmatds/ on my Nintendo ds.  There is also http://www.dslinux.org/blogs/pepsiman/?p=63 for a ds version of http://mathomatic.org/math/ .  I would love to see this feature implemented in rockbox.

One option would be to simply use a virtual keyboard to enter expressions for graphing.  An alternative would be to offer palettes containing functions, variables and constants; individual palettes being navigable by directional controls and select button.
