Recommend a stable nightly?
« on: September 21, 2006, 07:23:14 PM »
I upgraded from a May nightly to yesterday's (2006-09-20) and it would appear that it's a little unstable (Iriver H120, tracks getting cut off before the end, progress not progressing, wrong track info displayed, etc). I expected this as it is bleeding edge. Before I go back to the May nightly, can anyone recommend a more recent nightly that has minimal problems please?

EDIT: btw I have no idea if this is the right place to post this because the general Iriver H120 forum seems to have disappeared.

In general, if the very latest nightly file has problems, go the bleeding edge file (because whatever bugs are in the nightly are likely fixed) and vice versa.  If both of those fail, go back one nightly build.  I've never had to do this.

Also, is it possible you didn't clear your settings (On the ipod, it's boot with the hold switch on.  I don't know what it is on the the Iriver)?  These kind of sound like the kind of problems you get when you don't do that.

On the iriver, you hold the record button to clear the settings

Thanks for the responses, I'll try a build or two around the problem build.

I did clear the settings because I moved the .rockbox entirely out of the way and elected to use the default fresh settings from the new build.

Moving .rockbox does *not* clear the settings. The settings aren't stored in a file, so you have to manually tell Rockbox to clear them. In this case, by holding Record from after the bootloader shows up until Rockbox says "cleared"

This has always bugged me, and I know this is getting off topic, but if it's not stored in a file (as you say and my experience tells me as well, so I'm not questioning you) and it's not stored in memory (because you can turn the iPod off and the settings remain) then where *are* they stored?  Is there some flash memory or something where you store them?  Is there a hidden partition on the disk?  Does the iPod just repeat it over and over before it shuts off? :D

Well, there *is* the hidden firmware partition. But we don't actually use that. We just use a sector (I can never remember specifically what number) on the disk that's not used for other purposes and isn't part of the file system.

I never knew that. I will try that now. Thanks.

When do you hold the Record button?

On bootup, until it says "cleared" or "settings cleared" or something similar.

So far, clearing the settings seems to have cleared up the issues. I'll keep an eye on things and see if it's ok now.

Thanks for the pointer everyone.

I had the same experience since switching from a June dailiy to a late August one. The reset of settings really seems to have done the trick.

Yotto, thanks for that hint (thanks to meowsqueak for asking).

Note that settings can also be cleared without rebooting from Manage Settings --> Reset Settings.

Wouldn't that make the firmware go to iRiver? Or are you supposed to hold Record after the bootloader has gone into Rockbox mode? (If you push Power whilst already holding Record, you get iRiver firmware.)

What happens pretty much depends on when you're holding Record, yes.
