New to Rockbox - a little baffled with operation! Help please!
« on: September 21, 2006, 11:15:11 AM »
I'm running Rockbox on my ipod photo, installed yesterday with DUal boot in attempt to get crossfade on my ipod, it's working at the moment, intermittantly.

2 Questions:

1) Patches - How do you download them? Where are the links, and where do you put them? I need album artwork for now.

2) Playlists - I can't work out how to create one and the page where it should be explained in the is blank!

Please help, thanks in advance!

To pick and choose which patches to use you can go to the Patches link, on the left, and download them, but you'll need to be able to compile to apply them to your own modified Rockbox.

As for playlists, what page are you talking about that's blank, and have you tried reading the manual?

Thanks, the manual doesn't have anything about using playlists, it just says 'amend and add'. Is there a different manual I could read?

Also, regarding patches, I don't know how to find the album artwork patches, there's thousands there and searches come up with nothing..

Sorry for being annoyingly new to this...

...and no idea what 'compiling' is...

Thanks for helping, OTta007

I just did a search in the manual, and the word "amend" doesn't appear once. What manual are you reading?

Well, the album art patch is surely there somewhere. I've seen it before, but I don't use it. The SimpleGuideToCompiling page on the wiki can get you started with how to compile.

page 33, 4.4 in the ipod colour manual, it says adjust and add about using playlists....

I will check out the simple guide to compiling, cheers.

OK, maybe I just need to search harder for the patches.

Hrm. I do see what you mean about it being missing.

What problems are you have creating a playlist? Have you looked at the playlist options in the context menu, and in the main menu?

I literally just can't seem to create a new playlist....

...what are the basic steps?

Also where do I go to download fonts, I think I need one called Snap for a WPS I'm trying to download.

Thanks again...

Any time you play music it is in a list that you can modify. The basic creation is automatic and them you add modify and save. Fonts are on the daily build page.

Cheers fonts sorted, and now the basic themes are looking right too!

Excellent.

Playlists - can't seem to see where they are stored...?

Also to add to the playlist it is giving me the itunes 4 letter coding, is there a way to make up a playlist by seeing the track names?

Cheers again, getting there!

Lovin' the crossfade.

They're only stored if you go actually tell it to save the playlist in the menus. Playlists are simply a list of filenames, so there's no way at this time to see the track name in the playlist view.

All seems a bit wierd, all I want to do is put together a play list for say a Disco, choose which songs in which order and then access it from a menu, is this possible?

Yes. When you click and hold on a song, there's a menu called the "Context Menu" which gives you the option to insert songs (or folders, or other playlists) into one. If you've stopped (not paused) the music, the first Insert will create a new playlist and insert that object in it. Once you've got the playlist full, go to the Playlist menu, and you can choose to save the playlist wherever you want on the disk. From then on, you can access that playlist whenever you want to play those songs.

Another option is the playlist catalog. What that lets you do is when you're listening to a song, you can choose to add that song to the playlist of your choice (it'll show you a list of all playlists in the Playlists folder to pick which you want to insert it into.)

Nice one, thank you, I'll give that a go...

Another question (last one honest!)

Is there any reason the crossfade doesn't always work, there seems to be no reason for whether it works or not?

Cheers, you're a star,

crossfade should (and does for me) work always. However, if some of your songs have silence at the end, it may seem that there is no crossfade happening (because it is fading the silence). Just set a longer fade out length or change the fade in or fade out delay.

There is a good description what the various crossfade options mean in the manual.

At least on my X5, the default crossfade settings are all to zero, so even once it's activated, it doesn't actually do anything until you set everything to working values.  Perhaps the default settings should be to something at at least produce some effect when initially activated.  E.g. when one initially activates crossfeeding, the default settings produce an effect.
