iPod Video Battery Poll
« on: September 18, 2006, 06:17:35 PM »
Alright. Basically, in advance, I know there are threads that are similar to this, but nothing QUITE like this. Wondering, how many of you iPawders (Yes, iPawd) have your battery worth crap, using a custom build or not? Personally, I know that I'm having battery problems so bad that I don't get more then about 3-4 hours per charge (Charge = 15 hours or so for me). So ya, vote on how long your battery lasts on a single charge. Thanks people. I'm slowly learning code from my Computer Science teacher, Josh Block. And hopefully, I can eventually release patches that will allow longer battery life by not spinning the hard drive as much, or something. I have a dream that one day, rockbox will be able to run as efficiantly as the normal iPod firmware runs. Yes, it's radical, I know  :o

The forum categories are fairly strict. This was NOT an installation related concern.

There is a wiki page for ipod runtimes, and knowing how long your ipod lasts in RockBox is next to worthless w/o knowing how long your ipod lasts in the stock firmware.  How do you determine if your patched build is to blame or if your battery is dying w/o the baseline of a stock firmware test?

And the 30 and 60 Gb versions have different battery life anyway, so you need to be able to seperate those....

The difference in battery life is entirely due to the fact that the 60GB unit has 64MB of RAM, whereas the 30 GB one has 32MB of RAM.
So, in an unpatched RockBox enviroment there should be no difference.

Speaking of which, if someone has a working 64MB patched recent CVS I'd like a copy to add to my collection of runtime tests.

Are you sure the 60gb model doesn't have a larger battery as well? I don't know if more available RAM will make *that* significant of a difference.

Everything I've read says they have the same battery.  The difference in thickness is solely due to single vs. dual platter hard drive.

It seems like an awful large difference to me, but that's cool then.

Though, take it back.  Ipodjuice.com is claiming a difference in batteries between the 30 and 60.
~450 vs. ~850 mah?
Which makes no sense with the claimed runtimes, as it would indicate the 60gig is less efficient despite its increased RAM.

So, I take it all back.
I'll just go to sleep confused.

EDIT:
I can't sleep, for now I feel like an ass, speaking with such confidence and being wrong.

Surely I'm misunderstanding.. Dan, are you really saying that you charge your ipod for 15 (!?) hours and then it dies within 4 hours of use?? If so, uhmm.. whoa. That is not normal.

Nevermind. Being wrong is part of life. At least you didnt compound it by trying to explain your wrong statement in different ways....

And I like that you doubted your facts, so went to check them :)

I figured it wasn't normal. However, when I'm using the normal iPod firmware, I get probably...what, close to 12 or so? So that's what my whole thread was about: I'm trying to get a guestamite about how things are being weird on my pod. Yaa...that probably made NO sense whatsoever...

Did you have a look at the link Soap supplied in the third post in this thread? It reports peoples runtimes when using Rockbox on iPods.....

Honestly, I didn't noticed it until you pointed it out. However, I didn't see any benches for MP3 160kbps average, like my ENTIRE 26.4255 Gig collection of music...I mean, odviously, I can convert everything, I have a relatively fast computer...but dang...that stinks...Alright, Ya...if anyone can post about how long they get from using MP3 Format, please, PLEASE post a bench, or at least an estimate on how long your batter lasts. iPod 30GB, original.

You could just run a test yourself?
