Ipod Photo: Any stable builds lately???
« on: September 17, 2006, 06:15:47 PM »
I updated recently from the 8-30 build to yesterday's build (and then today's), and my ipod has been freezing on me close to every ten minutes.  Has anyone with a photo had success with any specific builds???

I have only been fooling around for rock box for about a mont and a half.

However,  EVERY SINGLE build that I have used (for the ipod photo), has froze on the WPS or gave me a data abort.

IMHO, rockbox on the 4.5g (photo) is worthless.  I can't finish my daily commute with out it crashing (no matter what mp3s I use).

I truely believe that the rockbox developers don't own or care about the 4g people.

Just my 2 cents.

If you do fine a stable build though, I would love to know about it.

Just because it's a bug we cannot fix yet doesn't mean we don't care. Honestly, clearly you care even less than we do, since we're actually *trying* to fix it, and all the effor you're making is complaining about it without doing anything constructive.

As well, a work-around that works the vast majority of the time has existed since pretty much the day the bug was discovered: Compile a build with CPU frequency changing disabled, or just manually set the boost count up by one in the debug screen.

While this is something that will never be compiled into the official build (as we'd like to actually *fix* the problem, rather than ignore it and avoid it at the cost of even more battery life) it will serve to make your 4G iPod much more usable.

Oh, and you're an idiot. If you don't like rockbox, then don't use it. If you want it to be better, then become a developer, or at least a helpful user.

Llorean is right about it being a bad idea to compile this fix into the official build. However, since it's unlikely that people like you will ever file a useful bug report, so feel free to use the unofficial version.

FYI, The September 1st build has been very good to me.  It still freezes every once in a while, but nowhere even close to the freezing every 10 minutes or so I was experiencing with some of the builds from later in the month.

wow.  you guys call me dumb for pointing out your buggy software.

I no longer use rockbox.

If you spent as much time working on the bug as you do looking for posts to reply to on the forum then maybe the stuff would actually work.

In all honesty the person who called you an idiot is not a developer. So, telling him to fix the bugs is on the same level as me telling you to fix the bugs. You clearly know nothing about this sort of software development, and I strongly suggest you spend a little time educating yourself before commenting further.

As it is, I feel no sense of loss at your statement that you will no longer use our software since as far as I can see you have no desire to be of any value to the community and would rather exist as a troll than in any way attempt to be constructive.

As a note, we have rules in regards to language here, and should you use language like that again you may find your posting privileges provoked for a time.

Moreover, no-one called you 'dumb' for'pointing out your expletive deleted software.'  You were called an'idiot' for making an uninformed and insulting  statement about the degree to which our volunteer develops care about the iPod platform.   Given the tone of your initial post, I thought that the response (which provided you with solution to your problem) was quite reasonable.

Yep, the idiot remark came from me.

It's true I'm not a Rockbox developer (though I do make two modified builds available to the iPod community almost daily, and have one semi-serious patch in the works), so I can't speak for the rockbox team.

I am, however, a professional programmer, as well as someone who understands basic courtesy.

If you think Rockbox is buggy, fine, file bug reports, write patches, or donate money. Those are the ways to help. Cursing at the developers is not a good motivational technique, however.

Yeah! Give these Rockbox some respect for all their hardwork and time.  Most people just griped anything in this world and not appreciating it.  I have been a Rockbox user and still have the old firmware and I know it crashes but there is a way around it than complaining about it.  Just give it some time and this Rockbox would only get much better.

I hope none of this negativity is towards me for asking about a stable build.  I'm extremely appreciative of the Rockbox developers, and love the software.  Since there's no official build for ipods yet, some builds will be better than others, and I was just curious what builds people were having luck with.

No, it's all directed at colemab. Crescentfresh, I strongly recommend you try the custom build Mikeage maintains. For the moment it's the best makeshift solution until the cpu scaling bug is properly solved.

Man, I've haven't been using Rockbox for long, but I gotta say the flaming is undeserved. It may be a bit buggy, but there is no other way I could have gotten my iPod Col. working on my older, usb1.1, linux based computer otherwise. Plus, I can use it as music player at my work computer and at home, something that iTunes would just balk at.

Not to mention I love the looks people give when point out that it plays Doom:-)

Thanks for the great os guys. As soon as I'm a bit futher into my software development degree, I'll start contributing to this classy littel app.
