Rockbox is very impressive
« on: September 16, 2006, 01:33:32 AM »
I ran across Rockbox probably about 6 months ago, but I hadn't looked into it much because I assumed that it would probably be buggy; this is often the case with F/OSS, and I expected it would be worse in this instance because an mp3 player is specialized hardware.  I also assumed that there was a good chance I'd end up with a dead player in the process of installing it.

Recently, I got so fed up with the dreadful software on my Archos Ondio that I decided it was worth trying just about anything to improve the situation.  I just installed Rockbox on my Ondio and it has totally knocked my socks off!  This software is so vastly superior to the manufacturer's software it is unbelievable, and, so far in my short time using it, it is bug free.  My thanks and compliments to the authors, this is a shining example of F/OSS at its best.  Now I can enjoy my Ondio much more.  I just regret that I didn't try out Rockbox sooner.

I don't find the controls intuitive, but I guess that may just be the nature of such things: you need to use it for a while and become acclimated.  My only real complaint is that the documentation seems incomplete and vague.  Maybe once I get accustomed to the software I can help out with that.

Thanks for the great software!

Have you tried the manual?

Seems pretty complete to me!

Your criticism seems incomplete and vague.  What is it about the documentation that you find vague?  We are always looking for ways to improve the manual.

P.S.  If you are talking about some documentation other than The Rockbox Manual, you should take a look at the manual.  You can find a link in my signature.

I'm using Open Source Software since a couple of years now and most OSS is fairly more stable than their closed source counterparts. Maybe you're just trying the wrong software?  ;)

Hmm, if he found Rockbox ... the manual is also linked on the daily builds page. And on the docs page. I really don't understand how one can miss that when actually searching for documentation.

If you have issues with the official manual, please report them in a way we can improve it. Thanks.

While they all said the right things, I fear the delivery could be taken a bit harsh... so I just want to take this opportunity to add a hearty welcome to the Rockbox community and let you know that new energy and helpful constructive criticism will always be appreciated. Enjoy! :)
