Creating tag cache on computer?
« on: September 14, 2006, 04:08:24 PM »
Is there a way to do this? I have no idea what the status is of my tag database since I "initialized" my iPod 5G (60gb)'s tag database.

Thing is its pretty full of files, so I don't know how long it should take - will it be faster if my computer made it somehow?

No, you can only build the TagCache on the device.

To see the status of the Tag Cache, go to Main Menu --> Info --> Debug --> View tagcache info.

While you can only build TagCache on the device right now, it would be *possible* for someone to create a tool to create one on the computer, such as a plugin for Foobar, but that is really outside the scope of Rockbox itself. It's not impossible for it to be done, so much as it cannot be done because nobody's made such a tool.

The perl script tools/songdb.pl in CVS used to work in creating the tagcache offline for mp3 files.  The recent tagcache changes (runtime db specifically) may have broken it but it's still worth trying out.

Hiya Folks...

I'm wondering if anyone on this thread is able to answer these four questions...

1. Does this script work with the new builds of Rockbox?

2. Are there any instructions for using the script? I'm a perl ignoramus, and have no idea at all what's involved.

3. Is there some or other simple version of it that might work on a Windows XP machine?

4. How do I get the script? Where is it downloadable from?

Thanks very much indeed.

Blue skies, love, Roy
