Video (.m2v) conversion
« on: September 09, 2006, 01:09:41 PM »
I have recently updated the most recen version of the daily builds for the iPod photo which now has support for the mpeg2 format (without sound ofcourse) and while i was reading the wiki i came upon the video conversion methods. I have no idea how to use them. I am in mac os 10.4.7 and i am using the vlc method but the instructions on the wiki page are to vague. Is there any step-by-step method available? Thanks for any help.

Edit: I have a WinPod because i switched over to mac, so my iPod is FAT formatted.

What is the trouble you are having?  The instructions on the wiki page tell you exactly what you need to do:

1.  Download the VLC program using the link provided.
2.  Open a terminal window.
3.  Navigate to the folder where VLC is located.
4.  Enter the command line provided here.

I changed the input to use parenthesis instead of greater or lesser than symbols, because it was being read as HTML.

Actually, while you were doing that I was editing it to simply link back to the wiki page!

Well i do navigate to the folder where it is and i enter the line and nothing happens. it's truly quite annoying.  Because it seems to be so simple on the wiki page but it just doesn't work. And am i supposed to keep the "<" and ">" signs beside 'input' 'width' 'height' and the output ????

No, youre supposed to leave out the < >.

Like so:

"C:\Progra~1\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe" %1 --sout=#transcode{vcodec=mp2v,vb=600,width=176,height=128,soverlay}:es{access-video=file,mux-video=es,dst-video=d:\temp\NanoVids\vid_00.m2v}

But i am on a mac. I have VLC in my Applications foler. And do i need to put the video in the Applications folder so that i can convert? Could someone give a step by step tut, even more descriptive than the wiki, for the Mac? Well if that`s possible it would be great.

OK.

1.  I already gave you a step-by-step set of instructions.

2.  ipodfoo gave you an example of the exact line that you need to type.  The only thing that you need to do is to substitute the file name and path of your files into his example.

I honestly don't know how it can be made any more straightforward than that.
