Initialize Now takes how long now...?
jordan_veale:
So, i'm in the process of trying to get rockbox up and running, and i'm stuck at the 'Initialize Now' stage. I understand that it takes a while for this to occur, i've read all the posts with 'initialize now' in them (via the search) and it would seem it takes about 5 minutes on average for the songs to...initialize? Well, here's my question, i've got...probably 3500 songs (a generous estimate) and some videos and pics on my ipod (a 30gb U2 iPod video 5th gen), and it's taking a loooong time to initialize. My question is (obviously) why and/or what's wrong? I don't even know what type of details to include to help any would-be helpers solve the problem. Uhm...Under RockBox info, it says Buffer: 29.168MB 37% 6H1M Disk: 27.8GB Free:15.9GB...mean anything? Help:?
when I hit the back button, I get what I would assume to be the music playback screen, with fader and what looks like '213' in the middle top...battery life indicator...some flashing numbers in the top right hand of the screen ...a circular dot pattern rotating in the upper left beside the pause logo (it says no 'file!') and 37% (buffer?) There's a little lightning bolt on the close to top left and a little pink on-top and white-on bottom shapey object (hard to describe, but it looks like the bottom of an iPod) at the bottom right.
If that's not vague enough for you...

Look under Info --> Debug. There should be an item called TagCache Info or something similar. What does that say?
jordan_veale:
It says
Initialized: Yes
DB Ready: Yes
RAM Cache: no
Ram: 0/0 B
Progress: -1% (2750 entries)
commit step: 0
Commit delayed: No

That indicates that the Tag Cache is initialized. My guess is that your problem is that you haven't selected the ID3 view. Please click on the link in my signature to the Rockbox Manual and select the manual for your device. The chapter on "Browsing and Playing" will explain what you need to do from here.

Ok, so I got it all working...but my only problem is (you'll think i'm a total brick for asking this) is...how to get to the menu that sorts all the files by artist, album, genre, etc?
The only way i've been able to do this thus far is to go to playlists, view current playlist, and skip to the bottom (the last track on the list) and fast forward through it until it's done the playlist and hitting the previous track button (left). Then it takes me to the file menu. Surely there's a better way than this, but i've been through the manual, and can't seem to make head nor tail out of what to do (sorry!) Any tips? (Be gentle)
