The preferred firmwares seem to be 1.29eu or 1.29k because they have video support. Of course, the k one will default to a non-English language (Korean) I believe when you boot it, but has the benefit of not having the volume limiter that I *think* the 1.29eu version has. Of course, if you use Rockbox, it's *very* likely you won't be listening to music in the retail firmware ever again, so it's not that big of a deal.

It seems like the korean version is the one preferred by "the iRiver community", and it wasn't any big deal to change from korean to english all over. But - does anyone know if there is any advantage in upgrading to the 1.30, that I see the is out in eu version (I have the 1.29k now)?

When it comes to the use of the retail firmware, I think you're wrong. No matter how good Rockbox is in theory, it's still not my preferred user interface when playing radio and mp3. I guess quite a lot of people are like me - Rockbox is great for lossless recording and FLAC playback, but for most other use, I prefer the original user interface. The user interface of Rockbox is a bit too "old computer" to me.

So, you're saying "How the $300 music player looks is more important to me than its music playing capabilities and its battery life?"

Because saying that its interface is too "old computer" pretty much says that to me.

Anyway, if I recall 1.30eu actually removes the video function, something to do with tax rules, or I dunno.
