Stable on H320?
« on: September 10, 2006, 08:25:25 PM »
alright Iriver's damn menu system is already giving me a headache.  I read in the Rockbox manual for the H320 that there's not stable build yet.

how much risk is there by installing rockbox on the H320?

TIA

Well, there are thousands of people using Rockbox on H300 series jukeboxes, and I believe that there are 0 instances of permanently bricked players.  Rockbox is fairly stable.  It's really not possible to quantify the risk beyond that.  Read the forums here and you can get an idea of whether Rockbox is for you.

Somewhere between "Minimal" and "None".

Assuming you're not using the US firmware (as in that case you're guaranteed to lose DRM support as part of the installation) you should be fine. While Rockbox has a bug here or there, it works very well on H300 at this point, and there has never been anything close to a reliable report of Rockbox damaging a player.

i only play mp3's, period - does DRM support mean anything to me?

do i need to flash the firmware or can rockbox run on top of the iriver firmware just like it ran on top of my archos firmware?

You have to flash once to install the bootloader. Then once that's done it lives more or less alongside the iRiver firmware. The bootloader by default loads the Rockbox files from disk, but you can tell it to load the iRiver firmware from the rest of flash instead.

If you don't use online music stores, then DRM support means nothing to you, or should mean nothing to you (if you're creating DRMed WMAs for your own personal use, I'd consider you a bit "odd" I think :-P)

(I just want to know because I might not want to do the flash thing yet tonight)

Yes.  Click on the link in my signature to the manual.  The installation process is described there.

The preferred firmwares seem to be 1.29eu or 1.29k because they have video support. Of course, the k one will default to a non-English language (Korean) I believe when you boot it, but has the benefit of not having the volume limiter that I *think* the 1.29eu version has. Of course, if you use Rockbox, it's *very* likely you won't be listening to music in the retail firmware ever again, so it's not that big of a deal.

I doubt that is true, but unless you provide more information, please do not state that it is bricked.  That is actually a violation of the Rockbox Forum Posting Guidelines.
