iPod...RockBox...and the XBOX 360
« on: September 09, 2006, 11:39:25 PM »
Ok...using rockbox on my ipod mini 4gb 2nd gen.
Everythings great.
Now, I connect it to my new xbox 360.
Go to play some music....Nothing.
So, i figure that its using the normal ipod/itunes directory.
Is there ANY way for my ipod to be seen as an external HD and
NOT switch back to the apple firmware?
I already tried Holding MENU on the usb connection, but that just keeps it running and allows charging.

Thanks for your help.

Why do you want to prevent it from switching back to the Apple firmware?

The XBox 360 should see your music as long as it's in formats the '360 recogizes, I believe. I'm not sure it's capable of playing AAC, for example.

Because, the console will see it as an iPod and limit access function.
It will only look at the itunes database and reference that for music files.
I can access the actual directories in photo/movie listings, but thats kinda useless.
I am hoping that by it not switching back, that it will be seen as a Generic USB Drive instead of an iPod.
I was thinking that is why it swtches back when I plug it in...

<mod>
Ok, just a thought...
Anyway to get rid of this dual-boot stuff?
Just force it to use RB.
Anyone done it? Any problems?

I don't have an Xbox so I can't speak on that.   But there is no way to both access your iPod as a USB drive and not be in the apple firmware.  I believe it's on the list of stuff to do, but it hasn't been done yet.

I'd be surprised if the Xbox (A Microsoft product) read the iTunes DB (An Apple product) but I'm not all read up on corporate policies.

Rockbox doesn't have its own USB mode. It *always* uses Apple USB right now.

Urm... I have an XBox 360 and a 60gb iPod 5G (Video), and have no issues with using Rockbox with it.

I plug it in, it boots into disk mode and the 360 reads the drive as it would any other flash drive, I can easily select my music and off it goes.

I guess maybe the iPod Mini does something different, but it works fine for me.

It's weird, I had this up and running with no problems on an iPod video, it would see the music, display it as a file tree and playback just fine. Then today, I hook my rockbox ipod up and bam not I have this issue too, haven't applied any updates or anything to the 360 or the ipod. Has anyone found a way around this at all?

Huh, found it quicker than I thought. If anyone's interested, delete the ipod_control folder from your iPod and it works just fine.

Just remember: If you use iTunes to sync your music, it's IN that folder. So be careful.

If you do need to keep the folder, you can just put a random character in the folders name by selecting the folder, hold down select to get the Rename option, then add a character. Then play to save it. (At least it does on the Nano).

When done, just delete the character and connect up to iTunes as usual.

Its a bit of an inconvenience but hey, there you go.  ::)
