need a new player
« on: September 06, 2006, 09:13:30 AM »
well it finally happened - i've had my beloved AJBRv2 for 2+ years and yesterday on the way to the train it fell out of my bag and is gone forever.

so I need a replacement!  and SUGGESTIONS!

Priorities :

Upgrade-able hardrive without sottering - the easier the better.
plays mp3 and m3u - I do not care about ANY other file format
Runs Rockbox
20 GB or bigger HD
LESS than $200

Thanks in advance!

iRiver H120 or H320.
If you require optical I/O go H120.
If you require color screen go H320.

Rockbox runs on the following platforms:

Archos Player, Recorder, Ondio
iriver H100, H300
iAudio X5
iPod mini, 3G, 4G, color, Nano, 5G
iriver H10

I have listed these (in very rough terms) in order of how mature Rockbox is on each platform.  So, for example, while there has been no formal release for the iriver H100 and H300 platforms, Rockbox is quite stable on those platforms.  It is less stable (though still quite usable) on the iPod platforms.  The H10 platform is new and still in relatively early stages of development.

This wiki page has a comparison of Rockbox versus the feature set in the original firmware for Archos, iriver, and Apple platforms:

http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/NonArchos?topic=FeatureComparison

It is somewhat out of date, but it nevertheless provides an overview that may help you select a player.

h120 not for sale as far as I can see

H320 - found ONE on froogle - http://tech1global-store.stores.yahoo.net/irh320hadrju.html - anyone think this is legit?

I would suggest that you look through the FAQ sections at http://www.misticriver.net, as there are a number of discussions about how to replace the hard drive.  This really isn't an appropriate topic for discussion in the Rockbox forums.

The iriver HD players that support Rockbox are all discontinued, though it may be possible to find that retailers still have H10s in stock.  Again, I would recommend that you try Mistic River, as it has a Buy/Sell/Trade forum.  These also appear frequently on ebay.

ordered an h320 from an amazon affiliated store - sounds like you can't do the hard drive super swap that you could with the archos- too bad for me...

 :'(

oh well, someone someday will make a super ultimate jukebox that doesn't cost more than my laptop.
