Screeching Whitenoise
« on: September 03, 2006, 09:45:43 AM »
I have a 30g video Ipod. While listening to music, it will play fine, then at any given time it makes this screeching :o whitenoise. I restart the song and it works again. It happens more frequently, when I am playing a song and advancing to another. Any ideas. Thanks

What build are you running?

What format is your music in?

Does it ever happen in the middle of a song without you pressing anything?

I had downloaded the latest build for the ipod video last week. I am using Mp3 format for the whole library. It does this quite often, at least every 5 or 6 songs, sometimes sooner sometimes later. This is without me touching anything. I even have it set to icatcher, no peak meters. It is a horrible noise, sounds like, static then a little pause, then static again. It does this in a loop like fashion.

So, could you confirm that it's definitely still happening with the newest official build, since it seems to occur fairly often?

Also, does it happen in the same place on the same songs, or randomly?

What bitrate are your MP3s? What did you use to encode them?

Several others have been reporting this issue recently in the "Senab's build" thread in the "Unsupported builds" forum.  You might want to check the last few pages of that thread, and re-direct the people there to this thread.  Note that many of the other posts referred to this as a "static" issue, so you might need to search for this word.  I personally find "white noise" to be a better description of this issue.

This is definitely happening with the latest build. It will do this at any time any song. I tested it a few times and it seems to do it randomly. My bit rate for all songs are 192kbps, encoded with, Itunes v6.0.4.2.

Sounds exactly like what's been happening to me ever since I started using rockbox--one difference though: it only happens to me about once every other week (and I listen on average 8 hours a day). It can be quite painful if I'm listening to headphones kinda loud.... I never bothered to file a bug report 'cause I figured.. well.... I just figured it was known and would be fixed.

- my collection is all lame-encoded mp3. (I have a few oggs but don't know if it's ever happened on them.)
- I've never used a PURE standard cvs build on my ipod, so... (the first build I ever loaded was something that included the 64mb patch for 60gig videos) ....
- it appears to be completely random. I've had it happen in the first two seconds of a song right after turning on my ipod.. or after 6 hours of playing non-stop.
- I don't know that it keeps looping. .... from my experience it's a SUDDEN screeech and then maybe a quick pause and then more staticyscreechiness.... at that point I always unplug the headphones or stop it though, so... yeah.

I deleted the build then re-installed it. So far so good, hopefully it was just a glitch. I'll keep everyone up to date. Thanks

I can confirm that mine actually does loop just like badbuick. and it gets much more evil/static-y after the first couple seconds. hmmmmmmmm. yummy.

ryran: On a CVS build?

If all of you could post the date of your CVS build that is having this problem (or better yet the date of the first CVS build that had this problem for you) and your iPod model so we can see if it's all 5Gs or if it's other iPods, that would help a lot.

This whitenoise hasnt happened to me in a while, about 3 months. It was in a few builds before any custom builds were made and has been in one or two of Senabs builds. It only happened when I was trying to change a song, screeching at the start of the chosen song. I only had mp3s then (160 kbps and above). As far as I can remember I had to reboot to get rid of it.

Thought I'd better add my settings

Crossfade (mix), track skip only
Replaygain (album gain)
No shuffle
No repeat

(I'm using Jonbuild without any problems at present)

I have the exact same problem when using the daily build. When it would crossfade with another song it would sometimes fail on the crossfade and the noise just radomly starts. It happens between some songs when i click play and pause too quickly and flip too many tracks at once when a current song is playing.

Take Care,
Jon

I downloaded the lastest Bleeding edge 25 -09 @19:53, and I have had this screeching white noise on two different songs during playback. the playback bar, elapsed time and time remaining then also exhibit strange behaviour, i.e. full playback bar, negative time on the time remaining, although the song isn't near the end. The noise lasts for a second or two then playback stops there's no sound for a few seconds then it starts to playback the same track from the begining and it plays that song back normally.

I didn't try it with default settings. I have reverted to a daily from the 22nd, with my settings, see what happens.

LAME @ aps
No Crossfade.
ReplayGain on.
EQ on.

Hmmm. Sounds like we've got a couple different issues going on here. As far as the one _I_ experience, I think Jon hit it on the head--I use crossfade 24/7. And Llorean: I never answered you because NO I haven't ever used a CVS build (I've always at least included the 64mb patch for ipod), and I planned to test it and get back to you, but... that's obviously not happened. ;) Annnnnnnnnyway.
