ipod video 30gig no longer mounts on mac. Rockbox still plays fine...

I installed rockbox with the current build (rockbox-ipodvideo-20060820) about 2 weeks ago and it has been working fine.  The player is still  fine but now I can't add or remove any music because although it says it's in disk mode it no longer mounts.  disktool -l from terminal doesn't show any fat32 drives.   I've seen threads with similar issues for the PC but I was wondering if this is generally a cross platform issue.

Any reccomendations on how I can retrieve some of the data using a mac or PC?

Also how would I go about reformatting and reinstalling if I can't see the disk?

Ideas on what causes this issue? and how to prevent in the future?

I plugged the ipod into a pc and ran the trouble shooter from device manager...  In the background XP detected the ipod an installed it.  It mounted fine.  

Even better when returned to my mac, it mounted there as well...
