does tagcache cause freezes?
« on: September 01, 2006, 06:26:22 PM »
while playing my ipod freezes about once per album. it either locks up and doesn't respond at all (besides reboots) or it shows a data error message. it happens with every bitrate and every codec. is this because tagcache is in it's early stages or maybe my tags are corrupted?

any help is greatly appreciated!

p.s. i'm using a 4g b/w and it happens on every build.

It is not tagcache.  On the 4Th Gen ipod, theres a bug involving CPU boosting that causes the ipod to lock up.  The only remedy is set the frequency so that it is boosted.

go to menu, info, debug, cpu frequency, and try scrolling backword(counter clockwise).  If it worked, it should say, Boost_counter: 1, and Frequency 75000000.

awesome..i'll give it a try...
and from what i hear this doesn't save so you have to do it every time you load your ipod up. what workaround have you felt was the most efficient if this fixes my problem?

(thanks for the quick reply!)

Hmm, i dont know much, but one time, i was testing out the battery life for FLAC files(the test fail BTW) and when it frize, the battery was almost depleted.  Not sure is FLAC and MP3 files does anything to the CPU frequency, although with mp3, freezes are a lot more frequent than with FLAC.  Other than that, some said that if you keep the HardDrive running(play song, then go back to directory, and browse a little) the freeze wont occur...  i am not sure of this tho

i'm gonna play a cd all the way through now to test it. i'll let you know the results..thanks again for the help!

hmm, are u ripping your CDs into FLAC and then tryed it???  Because from my understanding, the ipod will still freeze, but it just takes longer.

wait... so your ipod freezes up even with the CPU frequency boosted?(you have to set it everything u boot RB).  Thats a little odd...  Have you tryed place w/o using tagcache and with the cpu boosted??

I have not tried to manually do anything with frequency scaling on my 1g ipod mini, but I have had great success with this patch.

I have freezes with every daily build.  I use the builds from mikeage.net/content/rockbox and this seems to fix the freezes for me.  I mainly use the one that he has for the playlist which he also has tagcache.  I do not know what he does to change it but it works great for me.  He also has a build with the cpu fix.  Just some thing to consider using if you want to listen to your music.
