disabling USB bootloader?
« on: August 31, 2006, 11:20:05 AM »
I am using Kosh's experimental build 2.9.8 on my iRiver H320. I understand why the USB bootloader is there (for emergencies), but as long as the dual-boot mode for the iRiver firmware is available I really don't want it.

Is there any way to disable the USB bootloader? Probably requires a patch to rolo, I suppose.

What I am looking for is for my H320 to act like a USB flash drive when I plug in the USB cable. Plug in the cable, and it powers up as a USB storage device. Currently, I have to turn on the player first, then plug in the USB cable, otherwise it just goes into USB bootloader mode.

I suppose the alternate way of handling this would be to actually use the USB bootloader mode when I plug in the USB cable, by having rockbox installed on each PC I use. I thought I saw instructions about how to do this, but now I can't find them by searching rockbox.org. Is the USB bootloader currently functional for the H3xx?

I don't understand what you mean by "having rockbox installed on each PC". Rockbox isn't installed to a computer...

It would require changing the bootloader, not rolo. Rolo just loads rockbox from a running rockbox ;-)

With the way the bootloader USB mode is intended it actually works this way.
Plug the player in and it will get recognized as a USB Mass Storage Device, which is the USB class used by all external harddrives and usb sticks. So literally you're requesting something that is already there ...

The only difference between the bootloader USB mode and Rockbox USB mode is the fact that in bootloader USB mode Rockbox hasn't started up. When disconnecting the bootloader will load Rockbox and after that you can reconnect the player as you like - now Rockbox will handle the USB mode change.

You won't find installations on how to install Rockbox on a PC as ... it doesn't run on PC hardware. How do you think you need to install something to use a usb storage device?

(Btw, USB is handled in hardware -- the software is only enabling the usb bridge chip when it detects a connect, so from a PCs view there is _absolutely_ no difference between bootloader and Rockbox USB mode)

Well, there *is* a bug in the H300 bootloader that makes it fail to connect on some devices. I have yet to find out the cause, though, since it works perfectly for me on my devices.

Speaking of the USB bootloader. Can my jukebox charge via power cable while in Bootloader USB?

IIRC there is a patch in the tracker to allow charging via USB but AFAIK this doesn't affect the bootloader. So to the best of my knowledge, no. Someone who knows better may correct me if I'm wrong ;-)

brihall,

It looks like you have the same problem that I have.  My h320's USB bootloader mode doesn't do what it is supposed to either.

Linus,

Is there anything I can do/test to help you with this?  I recently got linux dual booted on both my machines, and I hadn't even thought to test it until now. (will do when I get home from work)

hey yeah,

my usb bootloader mode completely fails to manifest itself on either of my Ubuntu computers, I don't use windows so i can't say whether it works there or not, but i can't see anything happening when i plug it in usb bootloader style, querrying the dmesg and stuff reveals that so far as the computer is concerned nothing has happened.

further, when i plug in with the player on and the usb connection logo comes up, the icon for the drive comes up on the desktop like it did with the other firmware, however, the player shuts down in five minutes and the battery is allegedly completely depleted.  if i wait five minutes and turn the player on again, suddenly i'm back to something like 75% battery again...this is something that puzzles me greatly.

anyone know a fix for this battery thing? it's pretty alarming.  however, Rockbox otherwise is amazing, i love having a more utilitarian high contrast, low brightness display and gapless output! fantastic!

When you've got your iPod connected to your computer in USB mode, it's using iPod firmware.  It has nothing to do with Rockbox.  You'd be better off searching on an iPod specific forum for the answers to this.

(For the record, I have Ubuntu and it works great)
