5gen ipod - Tag Cache problem

--- Quote from: condictio on September 01, 2006, 08:39:46 AM ---OK - the struggle continues... :( I deleted old Tag cache files and installed daily build once again. Now when I initialize Tag cache it starts...but never finishes... According to the manual, initialization should last no more than 10 minutes - not in my case. This process lasts until the battery is down and when I start charging and want to use Id3 database it says "Tag cache not ready". So it looks like it can't finish the process of initialization. Even if I initialize Tag Cache with ipod connected to computer, after some time the battery goes down, ipod restarts and it seems that initialization can't finish.
Maybe the problem is that I got about 20 gigs of music on my ipod and that's why Tag Cache can't build database in reasonable time. Maybe I should transfer all music files to computer and than partially transfer them back to ipod updating tag cache after each part????? Someone help me, cause I'm getting mad :'(

reboot the player a couple of times... And have patience. Tag cache behaves wierd for me sometimes too when initializing or updating.

OK there's a progress - after 20 initializations and same number of reboots, now it created database... one artist, one album and one genre :-\

How long do you let tag cache work before rebooting?
I usually just need one initialization and one or two reboots. But when i ask i to initalize i just let my player (x5) sit until it shuts itself down.. and then i boot it up again, letting tagcache commit until it shuts down...

What kind of files do you have on your player? (MP3, Ogg, etc.)

I can tell you that on my 5G iPod, tagcache takes a LOT longer than 10 minutes. I haven't timed it, but I'd estimate that it takes between 30 minutes and an hour (this is with 30-something gigs on the unit.) I've also had to redo the initialization on my iPod before. For some reason, tagcahce gave me an incomplete list of songs once. The next initialization, however, worked.
Have you made sure that you have a full charge when you start the initialization? Also, did you try initializing WHILE it's charging, so that it can't run out of juice?
