5gen ipod - Tag Cache problem
« on: August 31, 2006, 04:38:16 AM »
Hi all! I got 5gen ipod and recently changed firmware to Rockbox. I wanted to browse songs using id3 tags, so I initialized Tag Cache exactly as it is said in the manual. The problem is that whenever I want to play a track, it plays next track from the same album. For instance I want to play first track from the album  and it plays the second, I want the second - it plays the third and so on. When I want to play the last it starts playing the first one from the first album. I thought that maybe something went wrong during initialization of Tag Cache, so I used the update option - no effect. Someone knows how to fix it?

What version are you running?

(There is a fix for tagcache returning wrong files from today or yesterday in cvs...)

OK - so now I downloaded and installed the latest daily build (from today). You are right that it should contain the change fixing this problem. But unfortunately - in my case - it still does the same. I made it to update Tag Cache once again and now it is updating - maybe that would help  :-\

Yeah.. Í'd delete all tagcache files under .rockbox and then initialize tag cache again -  to get rid of the old database.

OK - the struggle continues... :( I deleted old Tag cache files and installed daily build once again. Now when I initialize Tag cache it starts...but never finishes... According to the manual, initialization should last no more than 10 minutes - not in my case. This process lasts until the battery is down and when I start charging and want to use Id3 database it says "Tag cache not ready". So it looks like it can't finish the process of initialization. Even if I initialize Tag Cache with ipod connected to computer, after some time the battery goes down, ipod restarts  and it seems that initialization can't finish.
Maybe the problem is that I got about 20 gigs of music on my ipod and that's why Tag Cache can't build database in reasonable time. Maybe I should transfer all music files to computer and than partially transfer them back to ipod updating tag cache after each part????? Someone help me, cause I'm getting mad  :'(

reboot the player a couple of times... And have patience. Tag cache behaves wierd for me sometimes too when initializing or updating.

OK there's a progress - after 20 initializations and same number of reboots, now it created database... one artist, one album and one genre  :-\

How long do you let tag cache work before rebooting?

I usually just need one initialization and one or two reboots. But when i ask i to initalize i just let my player (x5) sit until it shuts itself down.. and then i boot it up again, letting tagcache commit until it shuts down...

What kind of files do you have on your player?  (MP3, Ogg, etc.)

I can tell you that on my 5G iPod, tagcache takes a LOT longer than 10 minutes.  I haven't timed it, but I'd estimate that it takes between 30 minutes and an hour (this is with 30-something gigs on the unit.)  I've also had to redo the initialization on my iPod before.  For some reason, tagcahce gave me an incomplete list of songs once.  The next initialization, however, worked.

Have you made sure that you have a full charge when you start the initialization?  Also, did you try initializing WHILE it's charging, so that it can't run out of juice?

Really? that sounds seriously wrong. I have about 13000 files on my ipod 5G and Tagcache takes less then 5 minutes to build. Could it be possible that you have hard drive issues?

Wow -- that's quite a difference compared to mine.  I only have the one unit and I have nothing to compare it to, but the unit operates fine, so it doesn't seem likely that it's a hardware issue.  I do know that I've read other reports of tagcache taking a while, so it doesn't seem like I'm alone here.

What file types/sizes etc. are you using?  I'm using mp3's, half VBR half CBR, between 160 and 200kbps average.  I use the LAME encoder in JR Media Center to encode all my songs.  My 5G is a 60gig.  I've been using Rockbox builds between 8/12 and 8/31, mostly Senab's builds, but some raw ones.

Something is obviously amiss here, so I'd be curious to know why we are getting such different results.

Thanks,

Larry

I have the same ipod as you, I have mostly mP3s (avg 192 bitrate) with a mix of m4a as well. I've mostly been using senab's builds, and sometimes the normal cvs builds, never had the tagcache build last longer then 5 minutes.

Have you tried to defrag at all?

Still nothing .... :( I charged it and then initialized tag cache once again. It worked untill the battery was empty, than I connected it to computer and it continued working, but it seems that initialization uses so much energy that charging at the same time just doesn't help - it would shut down after a few minutes. All my files are mp3 mostly encoded by I-tunes... Now  it says that Tag cache is not ready yet or shows a few files...  It's strange, but when I initialized Tag Cache for the first time it created id3 tags database (although it wasn't working OK) - now it can't even create this database...
Maybe the problem is that when I was installing rockbox, I had to transfer all files to computer (cause rockobox can't read the databes created by orginal firmware), I did it using sharepod and it has created much more folders than it should. For example it put some tracks into few folders whereas they should be in one... And now Tag Cache just can't cope with such amount of folders.... I don't know...

No -- I've never defragged my iPod, but I've completely wiped it and started from scratch before, so I doubt that fragmentation is the issue.

I mispoke, however.  I have some mp4 video files on the iPod.  I'm wondering if Tagcache gets "stuck" on these for a while, which is something that I've seem reports on in the past.

Thanks again,

Larry
