So, after a couple of hours piecing together instructions, trying and retrying, I got to the point where I thought everything was going to work; however, I now get "error: -1 Loading original firmware..." when I try to start up my ipod with rockbox. I'm at a loss and I can't find any messages dealing with this. I'm sure it's something I did wrong, but I don't know what. Can anyone help me?

thanks in advance.

Make sure you have both the .rockbox folder and rockbox.ipod file in the root directory of your ipod?

Febs:
I'm not sure why you had to "piece together" instructions, as they are contained in a single chapter of the Rockbox Manual, but in any event, the "-1" error means that the Rockbox bootloader has not found the rockbox.ipod file in your player's root directory.  Follow the instructions for installing a firmware build here:

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to imply that the directions were bad. Obviously you've done quite a bit of good hard work here! Anyway, I've tried a couple things here. I used terminal to move the rockbox folder "rockbox-ipodvideo-20060829 Folder" over to my ipod. That didn't seem to work, so then using an application that allows me to see hidden folders, I moved the two important files out of that folder. I'm not sure if that's the root foldler on an ipod (forgive my ignorance on that). Here's a list of the files/folders I see, when I open my ipod on the desktop: .ds_store, .trashes, .volumeicon.icns, calendars, contacts, ipod_control, notes, rockbox-ipodvideo-20060829. This is when I get the -1 error.

If I take the .rockbox and rockbox.ipod files out of the folder I get a -5 error. I know it's me making some dumb mistake, but because I'm new at this, I need you're help.

Thanks

rockbox-ipodvideo-20060829 is the zip file.  You need to extract the contents of this file to the root directory (and yes, the root directory is the one that you see when you open your ipod on the desktop).  Almost any unzip program should have an "extract files" option, or something that is similarly named.  That's what you want to select.  When your unzip program asks where to extract the files, click on your ipod and then press enter/OK/select (or whatever option it is that your unzip program gives you).

This should put two things onto the ipod:

1.  a file named rockbox.ipod; and

2. a folder named .rockbox, which in turn contains quite a few other files.

What operating system are you using, by the way?
