Listen to my music with ROCKbox AND AppleOS
« on: August 30, 2006, 01:59:22 PM »
Hi,

Yes, I have a problem, and I think I'm in the adapted section.

There are approximately 5000 songs on my music collection.

And I have bought an iPod 5G 60 Go and I have put my entire collection on the iPod using this directory classification : "iPod_Drive:\Musique\%artist%\%artist% - %title%.mp3

So I install Rockbox, and I can listen to all of my music collection.

But i have a problem, i  use foobar 0.8.3 with foo_pod and i have rebuild the iTunesDatabase on the iPod. But when i'm trying to listen my music using the original Firmware (AppleOS), it skip all of my songs ! I have use EphPod and foobar 0.9 with foo_dop too for rebuild my iTunesDB on the iPod, but it still skip.

So when i use iTunes on the PC it can correctly read my database and i can listen to my music using iTunes, and the only songs i can listen with AppleOS on my iPod are those transferred using iTunes on the PC.

My question is : How I can listen to all of my music collection using ROCKbox and AppleOS on my iPod ?

If you can at least light me...

Thanks in advance !!!!

I believe that there is a filename length restriction in the iPod firmware.  So, if you want to use a directory structure rather than letting iTunes build its own filestructure using its 4-character naming system, you will not be able to play the files in the iPod firmware.

The only way that I am aware of to play the same files using both the iPod firmware and Rockbox is to load the files using iTunes or some other program that will create an iTunes style file structure on your player.  You will then need to use the Rockbox Tag Cache feature to find those songs and build a tag database that Rockbox can read.  This means that you will not be able to organize your music using your own directory structure if you want to use the iPod firmware.  This is unfortunate, but it is a direct result of the ridiculous way that iTunes creates its database.

Thanks for help from your crystal ball.

But what the purpose of manipulation like this :

"I have a solution to this, you will need Foobar2000 v0.83 and the foo_pod plugin.

   1. Copy all your files to the iPod using whatever directory structure you want.
   2. Connect your iPod to the computer.
   3. Load up Foobar2000, and select Components>foo_pod>Maintenance>Rebuild iTunesDB Database on iPod.
   4. Foo_pod will then rebuild the iPod database with all your music files, but obviously only those that are recognised by the normal firmware of the iPod (AAC, MP3, ALAC etc).
   5. You're done! One set of files accessible both by Rockbox and the normal iPod firmware.
   6. Kiss me, I rule."

And so, nobody can use AppleOS & Rockbox to listen to music with a custom directory classification ?

Thanks again

I haven't tried it with Foo_Pod and Foobar 0.8.3, but I have (unsuccessfully) tried with Foobar 0.9 and Foo_Dop.  From what I understand from the discussion in the Foo_Dop thread at Hydrogen Audio, the iTunes database is somewhat different for the 5G.   If the Foo_Pod method works, that's great.  But unfortunately, I haven't been able to get it working on my 5G.

The DB is different due it having to house the video's aswell afaik.

This does NOT WORK with the new 30g Video firmware...
all this did was CORRUPT my itunes library, and now NOTHING
will play in itunes! All movies are GONE... however, if I use rockbox firmware, the files (mp3s) are still there and playable, but are USELESS in itunes....

Since your mp3s are still there on your iPod, you can always navigate to the (hidden) iPod_Control/Music folder on the iPod and drag all those subfolders with the mp3s back into the iPod in iTunes. It should reload them all... Actually if you do it that way it'll probably try and copy the files back into there, so you may need to go the roundabout way of dragging the folders off the iPod (deleting them from there) and then dragging them in again via iTunes. Annoying!

The foo_pod plugin doesn't work in the latest foobar2000 versions, but there's a foo_dop plugin that's even better and does work, if you google it. I'm not sure it'll solve anything much though... Unfortunately iTunes itself is the only way to *really* properly handle everything on an iPod (like gapless playback, compilation support etc).

Can I ask what you were trying to accomplish?  The thread that you were following is quite old.  If you want to listen to music using both Rockbox and the native firmware, just load it using iTunes and then use Rockbox's database to find it in Rockbox.  Our manual explains further how to do this.
