Apple firmware updated - no rockbox on startup
« on: August 29, 2006, 03:16:54 PM »
I had my nano recharging on my girlfriend's pc (which has the ipod installation stuff installed because she's got one herself) and before she closed down the pc, she apparently (details are clouded...) hit 'update  now' when it informed her that the firmware needed an update. Now the nano will only boot the apple os when i restart it. The rockbox files I  copied to the nano's 'hard'drive are still there but something is obviously missing. Do I need to reinstall rockbox?

Running the Ipod upgrader will overwrite the area where the bootloader is located, as far as I know, so yes, you'll need to reinstall Rockbox.

Okay, thanks for the quick reply. She apparently thought she was saving my music collection from certain doom so I don't really have the heart to tell her that no, in fact....   :-\

I'm glad you didn't slap your girlfriend. I know how guys are with their IT gadgets. They get very uptight over it.

Does re-installing the apple firmware return the iPod to it's "Pre Rockbox" state, or is it more complicated than this?  Is this an effective method of "undoing" the rockbox installation, or is it better to use the files created during the Rockbox install to do this?  I'm just curious what's going on "under the hood."

Thanks,

Larry

Updating effectively removes rockbox and installs the new Apple firmware back onto the firmware partition.

Well it overwrites the patched file. You would then need to remove the .rockbox folder, and rockbox.ipod file to have it completely gone.

Before I do something irrevocable, can someone tell me if this will work:
- update Apple firmware
- re-install rockbox with the installer

And nothing else?   Will I need to re-add the .rockbox folder and rockbox.ipod file?   And will doing this affect the other files (music, videos) on my ipod?

It should work, but there is NO official installer. Any use of an installer to install Rockbox is *not* supported by us.
