TagCache help
« on: August 27, 2006, 05:03:05 AM »
Hi, installed Rockbox today and glad to say that I'm very pleased with the way Rockbox works and so much more you can do to it but I am having trouble with TagCache though.

The problem is that I already have around 5000+ songs on my iPod and would love to browse through the music collection like it is on the Apple OS but when I tried to use TagCache to build the database it locks up after a minute or so and requires a restart. Could someone please help me with this problem?

I have a 60GB Video and using the latest build (27/8/06)

I hope I've posted this in the right section.

How do you know it is locked up and requires a restart?  Tagcache can take some time to initialize.  I'm not sure exactly how long, but I'm quite sure it's more than "a minute or so"

Because I've tried leaving for more than 2 hours and nothing happens. Also the HD doesn't spin when it frozen. I could be wrong but I just need to know what is wrong and see if anyone could tell me why.

Do you mean that after activiating TagCache, you can't do anything else?

You do know that TagCache does it job in the background right?

On the 26:th of August there was a commit to the cvs whose description read

Quote
Prevent an endless loop in some m4a files (looks like a crash when initializing tagcache).

Maybe a newer version could solve your problem?

I'm using the latest builds always but still no luck :-\ and yes I realised that it works in the background but after about 2 minds the screen is frozen and cannot do anything. Tried leaving it for 2-3 hours but still nothing.

Could it be somethig to do with m4a's with album arts tags?

evoGage : Try one of the older unsupported builds that users created and see if the same thing happens.

I had the same problem which i reported to Slasheri who creasted the cvs updated above. The chances are your Tagcache build is getting stuck on a file. Best way to find the file is to run the Simulator using the files from your Ipod.

1. first you are going to need to build a logf build sim you can go here for more info:

The way i did it was as follows:
I created a logf enanabled ipod build, put this on my ipod. I then ran the tagcache update, then quickly moved to the debug menu. This shows all progress of the Tagcache build, however Slasheri pointed out that this is not real time, but its a good idea to take note of where the build freezes.

Next step is to build a logf enabled iriver logf sim, this is for the remote (which shows the logf output realtime). Once the Sim is build using the information from before, copy the corrupt directly into Sim's archos directory and then run tagcache from the Sim. It should hopefully stop at the corrupted file.

Sounds a bit long winded but shouldnt take too much time.
