And if AA is supported for non-backdrop setups, how long will it take until others scream for AA support when using backdrops? This opens a can of worms.

I disagree. There are a lot of programs around that are simply bloatware: support as much features as possible, but the majority of them is broken. I prefer less features that work reliably.

Anyway: afaik, there are currently no plans of adding anti-aliased fonts or considering it.

I don't thing there is nothing wrong in screaming for features.
In the end the gain is for all. For the program that became state of the art, programmers that became estimated, and users that are happy and can be proud (even more) of the program.
What's wrong with this?

Moreover i don't scream for nothing.

I don't think this is bloatware at all. I was proposing a feauture i think can be valuable for at least 50% of the rockbox users.
Are obviously developers that decide if implements or not.
Personally i'm already really thanking for what they have done until now, and i would be even more happy if they would do a little step further :)

It is precisely the accumulated cruft of "little steps" which lead to bloatware.
