It sounds like you didn't follow the install instructions properly. Did you really unzip the Rockbox zip file properly?

i am also getting this. i just updated my iriver 1h20 to the latest cvs build 2 times and still get codec failure. i am trying the 20060730 build to see if i still get it.  shouldnt this post be in the audio/playback forum? im just posting here so i dont have to start another thread and since a moderator didnt move it already  i figured itd be alright to post here.
[edit] while my post was loading i was thinking, i didnt let that build finish downloading and i had version rockbox-h120-20060826 still on my computer. i just extracted those codecs and those work. is there something wrong with the current codecs? or is it my mp3 player?[edit]
alright ill try that Llorean. thanks

Sometimes you'll get codec failures until you manually reset your settings during booting.

ok now i got it to work. took me awhile.  idk what the problem is but its working now. i reflashed my player and now it works. reason why i did this is because it would say when it booked up 050821-xxx but when i ran rolo it would say its version 060829-xxxx so i reflashed it and now its working perfectly. isnt it on the ipods you press the hold button to clear the settings? or i was just getting "hold" stuck in my head as i have to hold record to clear the settings

If you're running Rockbox from flash, you need to have compatible versions of the codecs. This means that if things change with codecs, you need to either upgrade the version of Rockbox loaded into flash (don't know if that is possible at this point) or stop running Rockbox from flash.

I'm guessing that good manners and protocol indicate that I should add my problem here, rather than starting a new thread.

I have been updating RB on my IRiver H140 for the past few weeks, but continually get the "codec failure" indication.  The latest build where I have been getting this is 30 September 06. I have not used any but the daily builds linked to on the main page.

I have been able to do the reset by rebooting and setting the hold switch to "ON".

When I play an MP3 or OGG after the reset tip, given by Llorean above, it works. Then I load a theme, for example ICatcher. Everything OK so far. So I save the config.

I turn off the iRiver and turn it back on. The theme is gone. So I reload the config I just saved. Then the codec failures are reintroduced.

I can run with the 26 August 06 build, which was the last one I was successfully running before I started getting these failures.

I tried the 30 September 06 build for the H340 on my other iRiver. I get the same problems there. I don't use the 340 much, it is a backup just-in-case machine. So I hadn't gotten around to trying the builds there. My last load there was 17 July 06. That one worked OK, also.

Is it always the same file that gives you the error (like playing the same playlist every time)? Maybe it's only a single file that triggers this. Have you tried removing the complete .rockbox folder (make sure to not use the recycle bin) and reinstalling? I sometimes have the intention that windows sometimes makes strange things on replacing.

I have a current cvs build and can't reproduce that error on my h120.

No it is different files and different formats (I have both MP3s and OGGs).

I cleared the .rockbox directory and reloaded the 30 September build and the fonts. That seems to have fixed the problem. Something tells me there's an RTFM coming from someone, somewhere in my near future. In my whiny defense I'll say: Just overlaying has worked for the last 1 year 2 months.

How does one whine with emoticons?

Anyway, thanks bluebrother

littlebone, given that you obviously searched for an answer and had the courtesy to post your problem in an existing thread on the topic, I will personally delete any RTFM response that anyone writes.  Thank you for doing things the right way!

(By the way, I also upgrade builds by simply overwriting the old one.)

Actually, on iRiver units resetting the settings is accomplished with the Record button being held down shortly after power-on (not before) and until Rockbox says "Cleared".

I've found that occasionally overlaying builds results in some strangeness. I can't logically come up with why, because nothing makes sense, but removing the build entirely, putting a new one on, and clearing the settings while booting has fixed it any time this happens (I once had it giving me a data abort every time I booted, and neither clearing nor putting on a new build worked, but doing both, after entirely removing the folder, worked for some reason.)

I also experienced this strange behaviour once. It even wouldn't let fixing by removing the rockbox files completely, so I moved all files to my PC and reinstalled Rockbox with the disk nearly completely empty -- then it worked. I have no idea what happened but I guess there was something strange on the harddisk going on.

Try this: ;'-( (and I just noticed that the forum has a whining emoticon already:  :'( )
Nice to see you haven't experienced that crash I had quite some time back.

this should be written to the wiki in the iriver faq, it is an important feature and I only learned it from the "experimental builds" in the misticriver forums at first and we have to tell this to people constantly.

Maybe a wiki page dedicated to getting everything working again when a build is seriously broken on the player?
If there isn't something like this already I might set something up tonight.
