Playlist help please
« on: August 24, 2006, 09:30:12 PM »
Can I get some ideas on managing playlists?

I have a big music library, organized into nice neat folders. I have a 4Gb Nano, which I use to listen to my favorite tracks of the week.  It is much too small to hold all of my music.  I also have a Squeezebox at home that plays from my music library.

What I would like to do is find an easy way to swap individual tracks back and forth to my nano, without using the windows file explorer to copy.  A software tool that allows me to listen to a track before marking it for sync would be great. Ideally, this tool would replicate the file structure of my library onto the Nano, so I can find the music easily.

Does something like this exist?

I would like to point out that this isn't really a Rockbox issue in any way. Nor does it actually say in your post anything about M3U playlists. You seem to simply be asking about a general music management solution for a small player, which is mostly outside the scope of this whole board, but very very definitely is not appropriate for the Audio Playback and Playlists board.

You may want to post an inquiry at the forums at Misticriver.net.

Sorry, I wasn't aware of the exacting rigor of this discussion forum. I'll try to keep my mouth shut in the future.    ;)

In case you do come back here, MediaMonkey has a feature that will sync random subsets to a smaller player.

For most people it is better to just occasionally read RockBox forums to see where things are up to, and save your posting of questions for over at MR. Don't worry about posting over there, they're a friendly bunch.

What people have to understand is that the Rockbox forums have a very specific purpose:  to provide support for Rockbox.  When we restrict the content of posts here to Rockbox-related issues, we are not trying to be unhelpful.  To the contrary, we do that so that we can be as helpful as possible with respect to Rockbox-related issues.

Between Llorean, myself, and some others, we read every post that is made in these forums, and we make our best effort to reply to posts that pose questions about Rockbox's use, development, etc.  Off-topic posts impede our ability to provide the support that is the purpose of this forum.  For example, I often read the Rockbox forums from my phone while taking the train to and from work.  I know that Llorean does the same.  It takes a very long time to get through the posts when there are many threads that have nothing whatsoever to do with Rockbox.

We have nothing against forums for general computing questions, questions about music management, or even just idle chatter.  But there are plenty of those types of forums available on the internet.  Just as you wouldn't go to a Dell forum to ask questions about your Apple Mac, we prefer that people not use the Rockbox forums to ask questions unrelated to Rockbox.
