New forum/subforum distinctions
« on: August 24, 2006, 02:26:51 AM »
Is it me or do the new forum and subforum distinctions just suck..

It just does not browse as easy as the previous setup. It took me even quit some time to figure out where to post this post..

What's so hard about "General discussion?"

90% of the topics in the player-specific forums were not player specific at all. These forums focus attention on the features and software itself, since very rarely are there player specific topics.

I think it's just a matter of adjustment (which I'm still undergoing myself)...but I can see how the new layout will make more sense in the long run.

Is it just me, or do whiny threads like this just suck?

I don't understand how these don't navigate as easily.

For example, now if you want to ask how to get Doom working, you can simply ask in "Plugins" rather than trying to figure out if it's General Discussion, Ipod General, or your specific Ipod model. If you can't get music to play the way you want, you can ask in Audio playback. If you're confused about the menu system, User Interface.

What questions actually benefited from the old system?

For example I was looking for the two threads on experimental builds, which used to be in the ipod forum, but  could not find them in either the Ipod or in the WPS and Customization forums (and still cannot find them).
And I find it confusing that I do not know beforehand when I open a thread that the discussion might concern a different player then my own, but that should not be a problem if 90% of all threads concern all models as you say.

There is a specific forum for Experimental/Unupported builds!

It is under Rockbox Development, then Unsupported Builds.

The blurb says, "For 'experimental' builds. ALL problems with them should be reported in the build's thread, one thread per build."

IMHO, it was fairly obvious with a cursory glance at the new forum names and descriptions.
